I-410 at Hwy 151 update

The westbound exit ramp off Hwy 151 to Ingram and Potranco roads has been closed, as has the entrance ramp on the eastbound side coming from the same roads, while crews construct the new direct connector from eastbound Hwy 151 to northbound I-410.

Those ramps are expected to remain closed through most of 2016; they will be rebuilt between bridge support columns and opened as soon as the overhead work at those ramp locations is finished and traffic can be safely restored.

That said, project bosses with Williams Brothers Construction are working on ways to accelerate the work at those locations to reopen the ramps as soon as they can. Priority is being given to the westbound exit ramp; this would allow traffic to more easily reach the businesses along the westbound frontage road of Hwy 151 and give Williams Brothers a chance to move to the exit ramp to Hunt Lane. No firm timeline is in place, but a target of this summer has been identified.

While bridge crews are working hard to get support structures in place for the new direct connectors (besides the eastbound 151 connector to northbound I-410, a connector from southbound I-410 to westbound 151 is being constructed) road crews are preparing to widen Highway 151 between Potranco Road and Hunt Lane. Several improvements to the southbound frontage road of I-410 between Ingram Road and Hwy 151 are planned as well, and crews working on the preparation work for those improvements are busily underway.

Overall completion of this project, paid for through Proposition 1 funds, is scheduled for late 2017.

First one intersection, then another (on Loop 1604)

Here's a video version of all this (it's a long video...):

Williams Brothers Construction is ready to have the Shaenfield Road intersection opened up for traffic in a matter of a few weeks, propelling further the already fast-paced construction of the Loop 1604 expansion on the northwest side of San Antonio.

Last week the intersection of New Guilbeau Road and Loop 1604 was opened for full use - including left turns onto and off of the side road. The first three days were plagued by traffic signal timing issues common to new intersections, but electricians have paired with staff with the city of San Antonio to resolve those issues. San Antonoio city staff has oversight for signal timing on all signals - including signals on TxDOT roads - in the area.

Project officials expect to have fewer issues with signal timing with the Shaenfield intersection, but still caution drivers to be aware delays may exist for those first few days. The change at Shaenfield is currently scheduled January 30-31, the weekend before SuperBowl 50.
Construction on the Shaenfield Road intersection is heavily underway; with overhead work finishing up this weekend, dirt work at the ground level will ramp up over the next week.
With the intersection at Shaenfield open and operational, Williams Brothers will close all the temporary turnarounds, both north and south of Shaenfield, in use since traffic was moved onto the new frontage roads last summer. Closing the turnarounds will allow road crews to continue work on the main lanes - and on the future exit and entrance ramps - to prepare for project completion.

Project bosses have a current target of early summer to have the overpasses ready for use.

Meanwhile bridge crews continue to construct support structures for the new direct connector from southbound Loop 1604 onto eastbound Highway 151. The overpass taking Hwy 151 over Loop 1604, landing the highway into Alamo Ranch Parkway, is also taking shape.

Bridge crews have tentatively targeted January 30 and 31 to set bridge support beams for the new direct connector over the main lanes of Loop 1604. This will mean daytime closures of Loop 1604, one direction at a time. Traffic detours will be announced as we approach the time for that closure.

The new intersection of Highway 151 and Loop 1604 is on pace to be finished by the end of the year.

Big swaps today, coming soon

Four big traffic switches are coming up - one of them today - around San Antonio. If you're driving on the northwest side of San Antonio, you'll want to know about these.

Loop 1604 at New Guilbeau
Work on the Loop 1604 expansion project between Bandera and Culebra roads has reached a point Williams Brothers Construction is ready to open the New Guilbeau Road intersection. This really is only about the actual signalized intersection at the frontage roads - the overpass is still several months from being ready for use.
The result of this impacts traffic for Shaenfield Road as well as folks headed to or from New Guilbeau:
  • Northbound Lp 1604 traffic to westbound Shaenfield Road will use the turnaround at New Guilbeau Road; the temporary turnaround that's been in use since mid-2015 will be closed permanently.
  • Southbound Lp 1604 traffic to eastbound New Guilbeau Road will turn left directly into New Guilbeau; the south-to-north turnaround south of Helotes Creek will be closed permanently.
  • Traffic from eastbound New Guilbeau onto southbound Lp 1604 will use the intersection; traffic will not need to turn right and use the turnaround at Braun Road to reach its destination.
This change is happening TODAY - 5 January - as announced in an earlier post.

Loop 1604 at Shaenfield
With work on the intersection at New Guilbeau finished WB will turn focus on finishing the intersection at Shaenfield. Look for that intersection to open up by early February (weather permitting, of course). Also keep in mind this will be a four-way intersection.
With both intersections fully operational (overpasses excepted), expect to see some slower going through the area. While we'll continually monitor traffic to optimize the traffic signals the reality is we're going from what is essentially a superstreet configuration to a typical signalized highway. Take some precautions now to get around the added traffic.
The good news is we're just a few months from having the overpasses finished (they are on schedule for this summer).

I-10 between Ralph Fair and Boerne Stage roads
Along the eastbound frontage road traffic will shift this week onto new lanes on the bridge over Leon Creek. This means traffic will move from the right lane onto the left lane - it won't really mean much for daily commuters, but folks should remain aware of what's happening so they don't get caught driving through orange barrels one morning.
The shift will allow Texas Sterling Construction to reconstruct the right half of the bridge, which should be finished by summer.

Eastbound I-10 ramp from Ralph Fair Road
Drivers coming from Ralph Fair and headed into San Antonio are familiar with the temporary ramp getting them onto the main lanes of I-10. The ramp, while a more-than-adequate length, seemed short because of barrier lining the road to protect the work zone.
TSC is nearly finished with the new entrance ramp and will have it ready to open later this month. The new ramp will be the permanent ramp and, with the exception of a final inch or so layer of asphalt, is the finished product.
