I-10 Expansion in Far East San Antonio: Beam Placement For New Overpass Requires Full Mainlane Closure

Work on a new overpass/bridge on the I-10 expansion project in Far East San Antonio will need a full mainlane closure this weekend.

Large beams will be placed on the new I-10 overpass at FM 1516 and for that work our contractor on this project (Webber) will need to shut down mainlanes in both directions at the intersection tomorrow night (Friday, May 31) starting with the westbound closure at 7 p.m. followed by eastbound at 9 p.m.

All mainlanes will remain closed until their reopening, which is anticipated for 9 p.m. Saturday night (June 1).

Also, please note that the FM 1516 intersection underneath the overpass will also be closed from 7 p.m. Friday through 9 p.m. Saturday.

Please see below and map to the right for details on detour routes during this closure:

  • Westbound I-10 traffic will be diverted to the FM 1516 exit and re-enter the mainlanes west of FM 1516.
  • Eastbound I-10 traffic will be diverted to the FM 1516 exit and re-enter the mainlanes east of Loop 1604 (the eastbound entrance ramp from FM 1516 remains closed until further notice).
  • Southbound through traffic on FM 1516 will be diverted to the westbound frontage road and turn around at Foster Road, then take the eastbound frontage road back to FM 1516.
  • Northbound through traffic on FM 1516 will be diverted to the eastbound frontage road and turn around at Loop 1604, then take the westbound frontage road back to FM 1516.

These I-10 bridges over FM 1516 are being replaced starting this weekend.
Police officers will be on hand to help direct and guide traffic on the frontage roads at the FM 1516 and Loop 1604 intersections, but significant delays are still likely. Please use alternative routes if possible during the closure period.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as TxDOT and our contractors work to transform I-10 in this area from an outdated mid-20th century rural interstate into a state-of-the-art urban expressway.

Once finished, we hope everyone will agree that the growing pains we're currently experiencing during construction will be well worth it for decades to come!

Loop 337 Expansion: Traffic Switch & New Exit Ramp

We're making great progress on the largest-scale construction project we currently have going in Comal County!

Talking about the Loop 337 expansion, which will widen it from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway.

Tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, May 21), southbound traffic will be shifted to newly constructed southbound lanes between Hanz Drive and Rock Street, weather permitting. Crews will also re-open the newly-constructed exit ramp at Gruene Road.

To safely implement the traffic shift, drivers entering Loop 337 from River Terrace and Hanz Drive will be allowed to make right turns only. This is a permanent intersection change at River Terrace. At the end of this phase of construction, Hanz Drive will open as a traditional signalized intersection, allowing left turns.

Message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to help guide drivers safely travel along the roadway.

We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain aware when driving through the work zone. As always, weather may impact the timing of these closures. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the Loop 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021.

The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive. It includes an upgrade to a 4-lane divided roadway with pedestrian accommodations and new bridges in various locations.

This is the latest milestone on this project. Previously, we put in a place a mile-long southbound traffic switch, diverting traffic to the new lanes between River Road and SH 46.

Heads-Up: I-35 & FM 1103 Closed This Weekend

We've got a major closure this weekend on I-35 in Comal County with an extended detour for local residents but no impact to mainlane traffic.

Our contractor on this project, Anderson Columbia, will be closing the I-35 overpass/bridge at FM 1103 and the northbound frontage road between FM 2252 and FM 1103 beginning at 7 a.m., Saturday, May 18 until 5 a.m., Monday May 20.

As part of this closure, the I-35 northbound exit ramp (Exit 178) to FM 1103 will not be accessible to traffic. The intersection of I-35 northbound frontage road and FM 1103 will also be closed -- drivers planning to exit the highway at FM 1103 will be diverted to exit at FM 3009 for a designated detour route (see map).

Please note: I-35 mainlanes in both directions as well as the southbound frontage road will NOT be affected and will remain open at all times.

This detour route from I-35/FM 3009 to FM 78/ FM 1103 is 9.5 miles long and it’s primarily directed for local residents trying to get on I-35 northbound.

The northbound frontage road entrance ramp at FM 2252 will be open to drivers so they can access the mainlanes prior to the closed intersection.

The need and purpose for this closure is for milling and placing hot mix asphalt to build up the intersection of FM 1103 and the I-35 northbound frontage road.

Electronic message boards will be placed on site in advance alerting drivers to be prepared for the closure. We will also have law enforcement officers on site to help direct traffic flow.

Despite all these preparatory and cautionary measures, we encourage drivers to seek alternative routes and otherwise expect delays in the area of the closed intersection.

US 281 Phase I Expansion Project Milestone: Traffic Switch & Intersection Reconstruction

As the US 281 Phase I Expansion Project (from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway/TPC Parkway) progresses and remains ahead of schedule despite logistical obstacles and weather delays, we're getting ready for another milestone taking place this weekend.

Come rush hour Monday morning, drivers will be driving on brand new asphalt for about 3/4-mile between Encino Rio and Evans Road. For those that drive US 281 in this area of town, you've seen this before -- what we call a traffic switch with drivers diverted to newly-constructed frontage roads so work crews can work on the expanded mainlanes in the middle of the highway.

Just like with the last traffic switch, this will be a gradual opening following rolling closures over the weekend beginning Friday at 9 p.m. with full opening by 5 a.m. Monday morning. There should not be an impact on traffic since we're keeping the same number of lanes. Please do remember that the speed limit does go down (from 60 mph to 45 mph) since it's going from mainlane to frontage road.

Turnarounds and intersection reconstruction

Please do note that the northbound-to-southbound turnaround north of Encino Rio and the southbound-to-northbound turnaround between Encino Rio and Evans Road will remain closed. Drivers will need to take the next turnarounds.

After the traffic switch is in place, we will need to reconstruct the Encino Rio intersection between the newly built frontage roads (just like we did with Stone Oak/TPC after the switch there). This will take roughly one week to complete.

During this time the westbound turn lanes from Encino Rio to US 281 southbound will be closed. Traffic will need to take the turnaround north of Evans Road. Project staff will monitor timing of the lights and will make changes as necessary to adjust for traffic flow.

Next Up: Evans Road Intersection
Intersection reconstructions can be tricky as the work area is tight and traffic is moved around multiple times so construction can be completed smoothly and more importantly, safely for drivers and work crews.

The US 281/Evans Road intersection will be next. We'll start this work as well this weekend. It will be necessary to temporarily shift traffic on the west side of the intersection and reduce the number of available lanes from three to two in the eastbound direction. This will be done in two phases:

Phase 1: Traffic gets diverted to the south side of the roadway in order for us to build lanes on the north side.

Phase 2: Traffic gets diverted to the north side of the roadway, to build the lanes on the south side of the roadway.

We're expecting this process to take at least one month, as always depending on scheduling issues and potential weather delays.
