Ramping It Up: I-10 Far East San Antonio Project Ushers New Access To FM 1516

Access from eastbound I-10 to FM 1516 on San Antonio’s Far East Side is about to get a lot easier.

This weekend, our contractor on the I-10 mainlane expansion project between I-410 and Loop 1604 will make final preparations to open a new eastbound exit ramp to FM 1516.

The new ramp is located just east of the Woodlake Parkway bridge and west of the existing FM 1516 exit ramp.

The relocated ramp will provide additional distance for drivers exiting the mainlanes to merge with frontage road traffic and queue at the FM 1516 intersection, improving safety and reducing backups from the intersection onto the mainlanes.

This weekend’s work will require closure of the right eastbound I-10 mainlane from Foster Road to FM 1516, as well as the eastbound entrance ramp from Foster Road from 9 p.m. tonight (Friday, January 31) until 5 a.m. Monday (February 3).

DETOUR: Eastbound I-10 frontage road traffic needing to access the mainlanes from the Foster Road entrance ramp must continue eastbound on the frontage road and enter the mainlanes after the Loop 1604 intersection. Police officers will be on site to assist with traffic flow at the intersections (see illustration below).

The new FM 1516 exit ramp will be opened to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday and the current exit ramp will be permanently closed and removed. Eastbound drivers wishing to exit to FM 1516 will need to be prepared to exit earlier than previously required.

Additional eastbound and westbound mainlane traffic shifts are anticipated in the coming weeks as new sections of work are completed. Stay tuned here for further updates.

I-10 Northwest Expansion Project: Beam Work On Boerne Stage Road Bridge

As we welcome in the New Year, we are also continuing to see progress on the construction of an expanded bridge on I-10 over Boerne Stage Road.

The next big step will take place this Saturday (February 1) from 4 a.m. until 9 p.m. when the I-10 eastbound mainlanes will be closed at Boerne Stage Road for the placement of bridge beams.

Drivers on I-10 eastbound will exit at Ralph Fair Road, proceed on the eastbound frontage lane past Ralph Fair Road (Ralph Fair Road intersection will be closed) and proceed past Boerne Stage Road to the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp east of Boerne Stage Road.

The westbound mainlanes will remain open.

The Boerne Stage Road intersection over I-10 will also be closed. Boerne Stage Road traffic approaching westbound I-10 will be detoured on the westbound frontage road past the Ralph Fair intersection to the Old Fredericksburg Road turnaround. Boerne Stage Road traffic approaching eastbound I-10 will be detoured on the eastbound frontage road to the Dominion Road turnaround.

As mentioned above, Ralph Fair Road intersection will be closed. Ralph Fair Road traffic approaching I-10 westbound will be diverted to the westbound frontage road to the Old Fredericksburg Road turnaround. Ralph Fair Road traffic approaching eastbound I-10 will be detoured to the eastbound frontage road past Boerne Stage Road to the Dominion Road turnaround.

Eastward Bound: Next Project On I-10 Toward Houston Kicks Off Next Week

Highway construction projects hold a special place in our hearts and with Cupid’s favorite time of the year quickly approaching, we thought it only fitting to give one of our region’s most needy areas some TLC.

Starting in February, we'll be delivering a fresh bouquet of improvements to the busy I-10 corridor from Loop 1604 to Pfeil Road in Far East San Antonio.

Add that to the ongoing love that I-10 in this area of town has received recently. A seven-mile stretch of the highway has been undergoing a significant makeover since 2017, including expansion from four lanes to six lanes between I-410 and Loop 1604 and the conversion of frontage roads from two-way to one-way access between Foster Road and Graytown Road.

The new $90 million construction project -- set to officially kick off next week --  will extend the mainlane expansion improvements for nearly three additional miles to Graytown Road and will include some major changes to the bridges over Loop 1604 and the Graytown Road overpass (see picture below). The project will also extend the frontage road upgrade all the way to Pfeil Road.

Our contractor on this new project, Jordan Foster Construction, estimates it will take approximately three years to complete. The good news is that the work will result in some pretty remarkable upgrades in this area.

Just like the current work between I-410 and Loop 1604, the new project will widen I-10 to three lanes in each direction from Loop 1604 to Graytown Road and will convert the frontage roads to one-way access from Graytown Road to Pfeil Road to improve safety and mobility in the area.

To sweeten the bouquet even more, the new improvements will also minimize/eliminate vertical clearance issues for trucks and other large vehicles traveling on and under the I-10 mainlanes by raising and reconstructing the I-10 bridges over Loop 1604 and reconfiguring the current Graytown Road overpass (above) as an underpass.

The new underpass will be located west of the current overpass to align with the eastbound and westbound I-10 frontage road intersections with Graytown Road, creating a straight and seamless crossing of I-10.

Just as a heads-up for those folks who use the existing Graytown overpass on a regular basis, the Graytown Road crossing at I-10 will be closed for the long term during demolition and reconstruction and drivers will be detoured to the underpass at Pfeil Road, located slightly farther east.

This work is currently anticipated to start early on in the project, though a detailed schedule is still being developed. We’ll provide advanced notice on this blog site when the Graytown closure and detour is required.

Construction crews will start doing prep work in the work zone this week, which will require various overnight closures of one mainlane in each direction from Loop 1604 to Pfeil Road. These closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly starting tonight (Wednesday, January 29) through Friday (January 31).

Once work begins  next week, the new work zone speed limit will be 60 mph. As a friendly reminder, traffic fines double in work zones when workers are present and drivers should always be on the lookout for construction equipment and workers (the state "Move Over/Slow Down" law).

To ensure the safety of drivers and workers during the construction process, the project will be linked to the “Smart Work Zone” (SWZ) already in place along the I-10 East corridor.

Smart Work Zones use automated and real-time technology that keeps drivers informed of events as they pass through construction areas through notifications on the overhead electronic sign boards.. (Look for a separate blog post on SWZs in the near future).

The I-10 expansion and frontage road project from Loop 1604 to Pfeil Road is just one of several current and future projects along I-10 in Far East San Antonio/Bexar County, including the relocation of entrance/exit ramps along the frontage road, conversion of frontage roads from two-way to one-way access and the reconstruction and widening of the mainlanes from I-410 to Loop 1604.

Next up, pushing further east will be the last of these series of improvements on I-10 within the TxDOT San Antonio District, involving the reconstruction and widening of I-10 from Graytown to the Bexar/Guadalupe County line -- anticipated to start this summer.

All of this work is part of our larger plan to expand and improve I-10 from San Antonio to Houston (the Houston District is handling its own series of improvements heading west toward the Bexar/Guadalupe County line).

Since we can’t distribute conversation hearts out to all commuters, we will continue to keep you informed of road closures and other construction activities along the I-10 corridor through messages on overhead sign boards, the corridor webpagesocial media and our closures blog. Lastly, folks can also join our email list to get alerts and updates directly to their inboxes.

Shifting Over: Drivers Diverted For Retaining Wall Work On SH 46 Project In Boerne

Important development on the River Road (SH 46) project in Boerne starting tonight (Wednesday Jan. 29) involving a long-term traffic shift.

This shift involves closing the center-left turn lane between City Park Road and Sharon Drive West to expedite the construction of a retaining wall on the north side of the road (see images below).
The contractor will be using the existing westbound lane as a work zone while westbound traffic is shifted onto the existing left-turn lane.

Throughout the duration of this months-long closure, westbound traffic will not be able to turn left onto City Park Road -- main reason being to minimize delays. Westbound traffic will need to take Charger Boulevard. to access Boerne City Park and City Park Road.

This shift is not expected to have a significant impact on traffic flow since drivers are basically just diverted to the left but we're keeping the same number of lanes.

Turn This Way: Loop 1604 Turnaround To Temporarily Close

Heads-up to the many drivers in our area who go through the perennially busy intersection of US 281 and Loop 1604.

There's an important development on the US 281 Segment 1 Expansion Project (from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway).

Beginning Monday (January 20) the Loop 1604 westbound-to eastbound turnaround at US 281 will be closed for approximately two weeks to improve the surface of the existing pavement.

During this time, Loop 1604 westbound frontage road traffic should continue west, turn left on the US 281 southbound frontage road then turn left again onto the Loop 1604 eastbound frontage road.

As always, we must note that this scheduled long-term closure is weather permitting and subject to change. We appreciate your patience as we keep making great progress on this major project and improve the safety of this interchange.

Besides our blog, remember that you can always get up-to-minute notices and alerts by following us on Twitter. We also offer e-mail updates for this project in specific -- click here to sign up for alerts that go straight into your inbox: http://eepurl.com/cXz2kr.
