We will be closing the Sonterra Boulevard access ramp from the northbound US 281 frontage road for intersection improvements beginning 9 p.m. Friday, May 1 through 5 a.m. Monday, May 4. This closure will allow us to improve traffic flow at the intersection.

During this time, traffic will detour by taking the northbound US 281 frontage road, continuing through the Redland Road intersection, taking the north- to southbound turnaround at Encino Rio and taking the southbound US 281 frontage road access ramp to return to Sonterra Boulevard.

Please note that construction is weather permitting and subject to change.

I-10 in Far East San Antonio: Say Goodbye to the Current Graytown Road Bridge

We’re at it again with another significant change to the I-10 corridor in Far East San Antonio. Just when drivers in the area have settled in with one-way frontage roads and various traffic switches, they’re about to notice something is missing within our most recent mainlane expansion project limits between Loop 1604 and Pfeil Road.
Starting this Friday, April 24, the existing Graytown Road crossing at I-10 (shown to the right) will be closed for the long term, and our contractor will begin removing the overpass. Drivers wishing to cross I-10 will be detoured to the underpass at Pfeil Road located slightly farther east.
The demolition of the existing crossing will require a full closure of the I-10 mainlanes between Graytown Road and Pfeil Road starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 24 and continuing until 5 a.m. Monday, April 27. Drivers will be directed to take the following detours:
  • Eastbound mainlane traffic will take the Graytown Road exit and re-enter the mainlanes on the newly constructed temporary entrance ramp located east of Graytown Road.
  • Westbound mainlane traffic will take the newly constructed temporary Graytown Road exit ramp and re-enter the mainlanes at the next entrance ramp.
The Graytown Road crossing at I-10 will ultimately be reconfigured to an underpass and will be located west of the current overpass to align with the eastbound and westbound I-10 frontage road intersections. This will create a straight and seamless crossing of I-10 and will improve safety and mobility for drivers traveling on I-10, particularly for those driving freight trucks or other large vehicles.

For more information, visit the project website for I-10 East from I-410 to the Bexar/Guadalupe County Line. You may also join our email list to receive updates on major changes and progress on the I-10 improvement projects and follow our Twitter feed (@TxDOTSanAntonio) for ongoing traffic updates.

The intersection will add dedicated turnarounds to the frontage roads between Kohlenberg Road/Conrads Lane and Watson Lane.

During this time, traffic will be detoured to the northbound I-35 Kohlenberg Road/Conrads Lane exit ramp before the Watson Lane exit ramp.

Opening of Permanent Turnarounds at Evans Road and Encino Rio

We’re proud to announce the opening of two permanent turnarounds along the US 281 corridor at Evans Road and Encino Rio at 5 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2020. Once the turnarounds open, northbound US 281 drivers can take the north- to southbound turnaround at Evans Road while southbound drivers can use the south- to northbound turnaround at Encino Rio. The newly-opened turnarounds will provide a more efficient flow of traffic and help drivers easily change directions at these intersections.
As we open the permanent turnarounds, we will retire the temporary turnarounds between Evans Road and Encino Rio.
Please note that construction is weather permitting and subject to change.
You can stay informed of lane closures by receiving alerts to your e-mail by registering here (link to http://eepurl.com/cXz2kr) or by following us on our Twitter feed (@TxDOTSanAntonio).

Finesilver Redux: Additional Safety Enhancements On The Way

An 18-wheeler crashed and rolled over early this morning on the I-35 southbound exit to I-10 westbound. The San Antonio Police Department determined speeding as the cause of the crash.

That's the exit ramp commonly known in San Antonio as the "Finesilver Curve," since the ramp is adjacent to the Finesilver office building.

Unfortunately, it's also well known for rollover crashes, particularly large rigs going too fast. There are more than a dozen warning signs and pavement markings already in place making it impossible to miss the 25 mph speed limit.

Yet here at TxDOT we truly mean it when we say we take safety to heart and make it our unquestionable top priority.

That's why as part of the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, the TxDOT  San Antonio District has received safety funding to proactively improve the "Finesilver Curve" to keep doing all we can on our end to reduce the number of high-profile crashes at this location.

Proposed improvements include refreshed pavement markings, closely spaced reflective pavement markers, additional signage and LED chevrons to reinforce the curve.

Due to the current decreased traffic volumes, this work originally scheduled for the summer is being moved up.

The ramp will be closed Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to conduct this safety enhancement project.

DETOUR: Drivers on I-35 southbound will use Exit 155A to South Alamo Street, turnaround to access I-35 northbound and use Exit 156 to access I-10 westbound (see map on the right for visual reference).

A feasibility study for TxDOT roadways in the general downtown San Antonio area is currently underway. The planned improvements will be implemented to improve safety in the interim at the "Finesilver Curve."

Switch Series: Traffic Pattern Changes Continue On I-10 In Far East San San Antonio

If you frequently travel on I-10 in Far East San Antonio, you may have noticed quite a few recent mainlane traffic pattern changes. A series of weekend mainlane traffic switches kicked off in early March and they're expected to continue now as we head into April.

Since the project to widen and reconstruct I-10 between I-410 and Loop 1604 began in fall 2018, our contractor has been focused primarily on the eastbound side of the corridor.

Crews initially constructed new pavement in the center median area and then switched eastbound traffic to this new pavement in summer/fall 2019 to allow for reconstruction of the outside eastbound mainlanes and shoulders.

With much of the eastbound mainlane work completed, crews are now focusing on the westbound side of the corridor.

During the first weekend of March, eastbound traffic was switched from the median area to the newly reconstructed outside eastbound mainlanes and shoulders from Woodlake Parkway to Loop 1604. This move was required to allow westbound traffic to be switched to the vacated median area the following weekend. This move allowed our contractor to begin work on the area’s outside westbound mainlanes and shoulders.

That brings us full circle to the present. Weather permitting since there are high chances of rain in the forecast, this weekend our contractor will continue the series of traffic switches required for westbound mainlane work by moving eastbound traffic to the outside mainlanes and shoulders from just east of WW White to Ackerman Road. This will set the stage for yet another future traffic switch moving westbound traffic to the vacated median area from Ackerman Road to just east of WW White.

Drivers will then get a slight break from traffic switches as our contractor completes final work on the eastbound side of I-10 between Ackerman Road and Woodlake Parkway. Once this work is complete – anticipated later this spring – the final traffic switches in this series will be implemented to move all westbound traffic to the median area.

As always, all planned traffic pattern changes and closures are weather permitting and subject to change.
