I-10 In Far East San Antonio: Extended Closure At Woodlake Parkway

As part of our ongoing construction expansion project on the mainlanes and frontage roads of I-10 in Far East San Antonio, we wanted to give folks a heads-up on an upcoming closure on Woodlake Parkway that will impact the Horizon Pointe Subdivision.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 9, Woodlake Parkway will be closed at the I-10 westbound frontage road. This temporary closure will last approximately two weeks -- it's scheduled to end at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 27.

During this closure, Horizon Pointe residents wishing to access the subdivision will continue traveling on the westbound frontage road, turn right on Foster Road and take another right on Sierra Sunset to return to Woodlake Parkway (see map).

As always, we're thankful for your patience as we continue this expansion and improvements work along I-10 East between Foster Road and Graytown Road.

As a reminder, the frontage road project led by contractor Texas Sterling Construction Company includes:
  • Conversion of two-way frontage roads to one-way.
  • Reconfiguration of entrance and exit ramps.
  • Construction of a new overpass at Woodlake Parkway.
  • Construction of a new ground-level intersection at Graytown Road.
  • Intersection improvements at Foster Road, FM 1516 and Loop 1604.
The growing pain associated with construction, including closures and detours, will eventually give to a better and safer roadway and intersections.

In trying to meet the increased mobility and infrastructure needs of this rapidly-growing area, the project is converting frontage roads from two-way traffic to one-way traffic -- much like we're doing on I-10 on the other end of town (the corridor between Northwest San Antonio and Boerne).

Research shows that there’s a significant reduction in the number, type and severity of crashes on one-way frontage roads. The conversion to a one-way format is already in place while construction continues on the frontage roads and the new bridge/overpass at Woodlake Parkway is nearly complete.

I-410/US 90 Interchange Project: Marbach Road Closed This Weekend For Bridge Demo Work

Heads up on construction work taking place on the I-410/US 90 interchange project this weekend!

Starting this Friday (9/6) at 8 p.m. until Monday (9/9) at 5 a.m., the intersection of Marbach Road at I-410 will be closed in both directions to demolish the old Marbach Road bridge.

The left I-410 mainlane in both directions will also be closed.

Here's the breakdown of the impact of this scheduled work on the roadways:

Marbach Road
Drivers on Marbach Road will not be able to go under the bridge. All traffic will have to turn right onto the I-410 frontage road.

I-410
Traffic on the frontage road will not be able to turn left to go under the bridge. The straight- and right-turn lanes will remain open.

As always, scheduled closures are weather permitting and subject to change.

Loop 337 In New Braunfels: New Southbound Lanes Set To Open

More great news on the way for New Braunfels drivers facing unprecedented traffic due to the city's continued population growth.

After rush hour tomorrow morning, (Wednesday, September 4) the newly-constructed Loop 337 southbound lanes between Oak Run Parkway and San Antonio Street will open to traffic.

All southbound traffic will be permanently shifted to the new lanes, what we typically call a "traffic switch."  Once this section has opened, crews will begin work on the existing lanes, with one northbound lane remaining open to traffic.

A newly-constructed southbound access ramp for Landa Street on southbound Loop 337 will also be opened. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 from Landa Street, or wishing to access Landa Street, from southbound Loop 337 will need to use the new access road (see illustrations). Access to northbound SL 337 from Landa Street will not change.

Following the traffic shift, drivers turning from Ridge Hill Drive will only be able to head north on Loop 337. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 will need to take northbound Loop 337 and turn around at the SH 46 interchange. Southbound traffic on Loop 337 looking to turn onto Ridge Hill Drive will temporarily need to use the new southbound exit to Landa Street, then use the north access ramp to northbound Loop 337.

Electronic message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to further guide drivers We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain aware to move over if possible or at least slow down when approaching work crews. As always, weather may impact the timing of these openings. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the SL 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021. The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive, and includes an upgrade from a 2-lane roadway to a 4-lane divided roadway with new sidewalks and new bridges in various locations.

Back in April, crews opened the southbound lanes on SL 337 from River Road to SH 46. In May, a similar switch occurred between Hanz Drive and Rock Street. The new exit ramp at Gruene Road was also opened. Work on the northbound lanes will continue during this next phase of construction.

US 281 Expansion Project Update: Sonterra Entrance Ramp Reopens!

Important milestone for those seeking traffic relief on the US 281 Expansion Project!

Those of you that frequent this major highway likely know that both northbound Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp as well as southbound Sonterra Boulevard entrance ramp have been closed for the long term.

That measure needed to be put in place to safely put in place beams for the new direct connectors (flyovers) connecting US 281 with Loop 1604.

In the case of the Sonterra southbound entrance ramp, it had been closed for construction of the new direct connectors going from US 281 southbound to Loop 1604 eastbound and westbound.

We're now happy to announce that the Sonterra southbound entrance ramp is scheduled to reopen tomorrow (Wednesday, September 4)!

Why did we need to have it closed in the first place, you ask? Well, that was to allow work crews to work safely behind barrier while constructing retaining wall, drainage crossings and direct connector structures beside and over the ramp (we would never want to risk objects falling from up above onto moving cars below) as well as reconstruction and realignment of the ramp itself.

So that's happening. But what about the Sonterra northbound exit ramp, you're wondering? That remains closed at this time (Frontage Road exit continues being your best alternative) but our contractor anticipates that it will reopen toward the end of this year.

While we're at it, a quick reminder that there's one more traffic switch associated with this Phase I (between Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway) of the US 281 Expansion Project. There's one in place in both southern and northern ends of the project.

The last one will take place in the middle, at Evans Road. As with the previous switches, this will also involve diverting traffic off the existing mainlanes and onto the newly-built frontage roads (in both directions. There's no date set yet for this last switch but it should come in the next two to three months.

Meantime, besides keeping it here on our blog or on our very active Twitter platform, don't forget that you can also sign up for e-mail updates on this project including scheduled closures so you can plan ahead. Here's the link to sign up: http://eepurl.com/cXz2kr).

As always, please recall that any scheduled work is always weather permitting and subject to change.
