Ramping It Up: I-10 Far East San Antonio Project Ushers New Access To FM 1516

Access from eastbound I-10 to FM 1516 on San Antonio’s Far East Side is about to get a lot easier.

This weekend, our contractor on the I-10 mainlane expansion project between I-410 and Loop 1604 will make final preparations to open a new eastbound exit ramp to FM 1516.

The new ramp is located just east of the Woodlake Parkway bridge and west of the existing FM 1516 exit ramp.

The relocated ramp will provide additional distance for drivers exiting the mainlanes to merge with frontage road traffic and queue at the FM 1516 intersection, improving safety and reducing backups from the intersection onto the mainlanes.

This weekend’s work will require closure of the right eastbound I-10 mainlane from Foster Road to FM 1516, as well as the eastbound entrance ramp from Foster Road from 9 p.m. tonight (Friday, January 31) until 5 a.m. Monday (February 3).

DETOUR: Eastbound I-10 frontage road traffic needing to access the mainlanes from the Foster Road entrance ramp must continue eastbound on the frontage road and enter the mainlanes after the Loop 1604 intersection. Police officers will be on site to assist with traffic flow at the intersections (see illustration below).

The new FM 1516 exit ramp will be opened to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday and the current exit ramp will be permanently closed and removed. Eastbound drivers wishing to exit to FM 1516 will need to be prepared to exit earlier than previously required.

Additional eastbound and westbound mainlane traffic shifts are anticipated in the coming weeks as new sections of work are completed. Stay tuned here for further updates.
