Frontage Road Conversion, New Overpass & More: Improvements On The Way For I-35 In Comal County

If you drive often on I-35 in Northeast San Antonio and New Braunfels, you've seen improvements we're putting in place in that area.

We recently finished work on the expanded FM 1103 overpass and are currently doing frontage road work in that area as well.

Additionally, we also have relief coming to the increasingly busy I-35/FM 306 intersection, with Buc-ee's and Creekside commercial development drawing lots of traffic.

Next up, starting Monday (March 16), we're kicking off our next project in this corridor.

The new $64 million project will improve roughly six miles of I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads between FM 306 and the Hays/Comal County line.

The project is intended to improve and increase traffic capacity at various intersections and provide ramp upgrades. Estimated completion is slated for March 2023.

One of the most significant improvements is the conversion of the frontage roads from two-way traffic to one-way operation in both directions between Kohlenberg Road to the bridge crossing at Watson Lane.

The conversion will take place in the first phase of the project, ushering a speed limit reduction from 55 to 45 mph.

This will allow room to relocate frontage road traffic out towards the right-of-way to provide room for mainlane detours.

Appropriate signs, pavement markings and construction barrels will be put in place to guide traffic safely through the work zone.

Some additional project highlights:

The I-35 mainlanes at Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Road will change from an underpass to an overpass. The existing intersection will be converted to a signalized intersection with turnarounds.

A new mainlane overpass between Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Road and Watson Lane with dedicated turnarounds on the frontage roads will be built. This will be called the "Parkway intersection."
