Making It Right: Addressing Turn Lane Concerns On SH 46 Project In Boerne

Greetings to everyone who lives in or drives through beautiful Boerne, Texas!

Our contractor on the SH 46 (River Road), Hunter Industries, continues to make good progress on this expansion project.

We know that drivers have had to be patient, particularly in terms of the intersection work the project has included.

Though original project plans had the dedicated right-turn lane from SH 46 to Herff Ranch Road taken away early on for the duration of the project, we've worked closely with Hunter to come up with alternatives in order to provide as much relief as possible during construction to the traveling public.

That's why folks may have noticed that this right-turn lane was given back last week (see illustration above). Even better news is that Hunter is pledging to keep it open for the foreseeable future, with some exceptions during off-peak hours when it will have to be closed for further intersection work.

However, we do want you to know that at some point close to project completion that right-turn lane will be taken away permanently. That's because the final configuration has two fully-flowing lanes in each direction for the length of the project (from Esser Road to Ammann Road).

As shown in the illustration to the left, this final configuration will also include a continuous left-turn lane in the middle that goes through the SH 46 & Herff Ranch intersection.

We do understand and recognize that closing the right-turn lane has presented an inconvenience,  particularly to local residents trying to make their way to and from Cibolo Creek Elementary School. Again, that's why we have worked closely with Hunter to do our best to alleviate congestion -- never an easy task in the middle of the construction work zone.

Hunter will still be needing frequent use of this intersection for equipment staging while completing remaining sidewalks, concrete rip rap and traffic lights.

Once that work is complete, the right eastbound lane will be opened. We appreciate your continued understanding and patience. Keep in mind that ensuring everyone's safety (from work crews to commuters) is always our top priority.
