I-10 Northwest Expansion Project: Out With The Old, In With The New

If you drive on I-10 in Northwest San Antonio and Bexar County often, you may have noticed a lot of activity at Boerne Stage Road.

We're actually about to hit a big milestone at that junction of the projects with the scheduled demolition of he existing Boerne Stage Road bridge/overpass, set to begin this Monday (July 8th) with completion estimated around Saturday (July 14th), weather permitting.

Our main contractor on this I-10 expansion project, Webber, will bring in a subcontractor to perform this specialized demolition to insure the work is completed safely and in a timely manner. A traffic switch will move motorists to the recently completed new outside lanes.

Located at Boerne Stage Road and Leon Creek, this switch is important to allow demolition work to begin on the existing bridges. Does the term "traffic switch” throw you off? It’s simply when traffic is redirected from one area of roadway to another section of the same roadway.

This traffic method is very beneficial because it eliminates the need for detours and full closures.

We detailed in a previous post the progress we were making on construction of the new bridges. The traffic switch will allow Webber to start in the middle of the roadway and work out towards the newly constructed lanes.

Demolition of the middle lanes will start at the bridge deck, allowing access to the bent caps and the removal of the columns.

Most of the equipment needed for this work is being staged at the bridge locations and is ready to go. In addition to demolishing the old bridges, the debris must also be removed. When completed, the old bridges will be completely gone.

As always, safety is our top priority so we remind the traveling public to watch for construction signs and to abide by work zone speed limits.
