I-10 Far East San Antonio Project: Traffic Switch Puts Drivers On New Mainlanes

As construction progresses on the widening of I-10 between I-410 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s Far East Side, drivers on the eastbound mainlanes will experience this weekend traffic pattern changes and detours in the western-most portion of the project.

Crews are currently working to complete the construction of new concrete mainlanes in the former center median area between WW White Boulevard and Rosillo Creek. 

I-10 eastbound traffic in Far East San Antonio will be diverted to new permanent mainlanes, which are actually below the existing mainlanes to provide additional clearance under the I-410 overpass.

Starting this Friday (June 28), eastbound traffic will be rerouted to this new pavement, which will allow crews to begin reconstructing the outside eastbound mainlanes. 

This traffic shift will also require the construction and use of a temporary ramp to connect northbound I-410 traffic to the new eastbound I-10 mainlanes, which will in turn require closure of the eastbound I-10 exit to Ackerman Road. 

These traffic pattern changes are anticipated to remain in effect through the summer and are intended to keep eastbound I-10 mainlane traffic flowing while minimizing impact to surrounding neighborhoods as much as possible during this time.

As with other projects we've got going across our district seeing traffic switches, implementation will require closures. For this one, drivers can expect the following closures from 9 p.m. Friday, June 28, until 5 a.m. Monday, July 1:

• All eastbound I-10 mainlanes will be closed from just west of I-410 to Foster Road. DETOUR: Traffic diverted to Ackerman Road exit to the collector-distributor road that runs under I-410, then travel on the frontage road through the Ackerman and Foster intersections and re-enter the mainlanes after Foster. Police officers will be on site helping direct traffic flow and prevent delays.
• Crews will install traffic barricades and route traffic to the new eastbound mainlanes.
• The connector ramp from northbound I-410 to eastbound I-10 and the eastbound exit ramp to Foster Road will be temporarily closed while crews install traffic barriers and place temporary pavement.
• Once traffic has been routed to the new mainlanes, the Ackerman Road exit will be closed. This exit closure will allow crews to extend the direct connector ramp from northbound I-410 to the new eastbound I-10 mainlanes. 

The following closures and detours are currently planned to remain in effect from July 1 through late summer (see map below): 

• The eastbound I-10 exit to Ackerman Road will remain closed. 
• PRIMARY DETOUR: Eastbound I-10 and southbound I-410 traffic seeking to exit to Ackerman will take I-410 southbound, exit at FM 1346/E. Houston St., then turn around and take the northbound frontage road to Ackerman.
• ALTERNATE DETOUR: Eastbound I-10 traffic may exit at Foster Road, then turn around and take the westbound frontage road back to Ackerman.

We realize that the closure of the Ackerman Road exit may cause some delays and inconvenience for drivers.

We appreciate your patience while we address these necessary construction updates, part of this overall expansion project that will add capacity through additional travel lanes as well as various reconstructed bridges or overpasses.

Please be assured that our contractors will work as fast as possible to reopen the ramps in this area.

We're Taking Action On Concerns Over Curve In Helotes

The Texas Department of Transportation takes its mission as a public service agency quite seriously.

We want to communicate and engage with the public as much as possible to make sure members of the community have their voice heard in terms of our work across the San Antonio region. That’s why we readily agreed to participate in the community meeting held this week in Helotes to address public safety concerns. 

Safety is at the core of everything we do at TxDOT – our top priority. 

We want to thank event organizers and residents for providing input into how safety can be enhanced at the curve/intersection of Riggs Road and FM 1560. Our records indicate that there have been four non-injury crashes at this intersection since the construction project was completed in fall 2018. We have made note of the various ideas, suggestions and recommendations shared with us by the public at this week’s meeting. 

We are currently undertaking a traffic engineering analysis, conducting surveying and examining potential steps we can take both in the short- and long-term. Some of these include decreasing in-line-of-sight obstacles such as reducing vegetation and looking into possible changes to the concrete barrier. Additional measures being considered include additional signage and pavement markings. 

We will know more specifics once the surveying and analysis have concluded. In order to develop an implementable plan of action, we can’t look at just one intersection – we need to examine all roadways and intersections on the project as a whole. Again, we highly appreciate residents’ input and we take their concerns regarding public safety with the utmost interest and consideration. 

We look forward to working with the City of Helotes, county and state elected officials and of course community members to make our roadways as efficient and safe as possible.

I-10 Closed In Both Directions Saturday in Far East SA

We're making great progress on the I-10 East project (between Foster Road and Graytown Road) in Far East San Antonio. 

Tomorrow (Saturday, June 8) the traveling public should plan ahead as the eastbound and westbound mainlanes will be closed most of the day to install overhead signage and move barricades.

The eastbound mainlanes will close starting at 5 a.m. between Martinez Creek and Foster Road. 

Crews will reopen eastbound mainlanes late morning and then move to the westbound mainlanes, where they will close between Martinez Creek and Foster Road. The westbound mainlanes should reopen by 8 p.m., possibly earlier if the work gets done ahead of time.

Drivers should follow detour signage and always use caution when driving in a construction zone. If traveling I-10 eastbound, traffic will be detoured to take the Foster Road exit and will get back on I-10 after Loop 1604. Westbound mainlane traffic will take the FM 1516 exit and get back on I-10 after Foster Road. 

As you may recall, improvements for this project include a new bridge at Woodlake Parkway, intersection upgrades, new signals, reconfiguration of entrance/exit ramps and conversion of the frontage roads. • Saturday, June 8. 5 a.m. until 8 p.m. Full eastbound and westbound mainlane closure from Martinez Creek to Foster Road (one direction at a time) as crews install overhead traffic sign structures. Crews will close the eastbound mainlanes first and reopen them late morning, then close the westbound mainlanes which will reopen upon completion of the work. DETOUR: Eastbound mainlane traffic will take the Foster Road exit and re-enter east of Loop 1604. Westbound mainlane traffic will take the FM 1516 exit and re-enter west of Foster Road.
• Sunday, June 9 until Monday, June 10. 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. All eastbound mainlanes at FM 1516 and all lanes of FM 1516 underneath I-10 as crews install precast concrete panels for the new overpass bridge. DETOUR: Eastbound mainlane traffic will exit at FM 1516 and re-enter the mainlanes just east of Loop 1604. Southbound FM 1516 traffic will take the westbound frontage road and turn around at Foster Road. Northbound FM 1516 traffic will take the eastbound frontage road and turn around at Loop 1604. Police officers will provide traffic control at the FM 1516 and Loop 1604 intersections.

I-35 – Northeast San Antonio & Comal County

US 90 – West San Antonio

• Saturday, June 8 to Saturday, June 22. Daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The eastbound shoulder just east of Loop 1604 on the frontage road will be closed for depression inlet work.
• Sunday, June 9 to Monday, June 10. Nightly 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. All eastbound main lanes from Ray Ellison Drive to I-410 will be closed for over sign bridge truss and sign work. The eastbound/northbound connector will also be closed. DETOUR: Traffic will be detoured to the frontage road and enter at the next ramp.
• Monday, June 10 to Saturday, June 22. Nightly 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The eastbound main lanes ½ mile west of Loop 1604 to ½ east of Loop 1604 will be closed for striping, litter removal and mowstrip work. The entrance ramps between those limits will be closed.

SH 151 – Far West San Antonio

• Sunday, June 9 until Friday, June 14. Nightly 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The eastbound right lane between Military Drive West and Wiseman Boulevard will be closed for mill and inlay work. Ramps will be closed as needed.
