Milestone Time In Boerne: SH 46 Project Starts Intersection Reconstruction

It's not called "milestone" for anything! As our contractor continues humming along on the much-needed SH 46 expansion/improvement project in Boerne, starting next week they're letting folks know to brace for some delays starting Monday.

The traffic switch and turn closures will be necessary in order to reconstruct the intersection of SH 46 and Charger Boulevard.

Both left-hand turn lanes from SH 46 at the intersection with Woods of Boerne Boulevard and with Charger Blvd will be closed. One lane of travel per direction will be provided through the intersection.

Officers with the Boerne Police Department will be on site helping direct traffic for the duration of this phase of construction to minimize delays to the traveling public.

The intersection construction is scheduled to start Monday, July 29th, and is projected to last approximately 11 days.

The contractor will be using this lane closure to repave a section of SH 46 between Sharon Drive East and Champion Blvd.

The contractor has taken every step to make this phase of construction as efficient as possible, and will have crews working 24 hours a day to accelerate its completion.

This construction will take place in two stages (see illustrations).

During the first stage, eastbound traffic will remain in its current place while westbound traffic will be shifted to the northern edge of the road, creating a work zone in the middle of SH 46.

Once the first stage of construction is complete, eastbound traffic will be shifted north onto the pavement laid in Stage 1, adjacent to westbound traffic, creating a work zone on the southern side of SH 46.

The contractor has taken the step of notifying the public through electronic message boards posted throughout the work zone.

As always, we cannot stress enough the importance of safety for everyone in a live construction zone. Please be patient and mindful of the crews on site.

Construction Update: Weekend Closures & Traffic Switch On I-10 In Far East San Antonio

As work progresses on improvements to I-10 in Far East San Antonio between I-410 and Loop 1604, we want to give eastbound drivers a heads-up about upcoming traffic pattern changes (“switch”) in the eastern end of the project construction zone this weekend, weather permitting.

You may have noticed new concrete pavement recently placed in the center median area of I-10 from just west of I-410 to Loop 1604. This new pavement will eventually become part of the final I-10 footprint that includes one additional mainlane in each direction. In the meantime, it will be used to temporarily accommodate traffic while the existing I-10 mainlanes and shoulders are reconstructed.

This weekend, eastbound mainlane traffic is scheduled to be rerouted to the new concrete pavement on the eastern-most section of the project between Woodlake Parkway and Loop 1604.

Confused thinking we just did that? Not quite. A similar eastbound mainlane traffic shift to new pavement was put in place earlier this month on the western-most section of the project from just west of I-410 to Rosillo Creek. Additionally, a third shift will be required this fall when the middle section of new concrete pavement is complete.

This weekend’s traffic switch will allow crews to begin demolishing existing bridges on I-10 at Martinez Creek and FM 1516 and reconstructing the existing eastbound mainlanes. Additional weekend work will include drainage improvements at southbound Loop 1604 and I-10. As you may recall from the last switch, rolling it out requires closures.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, July 26, through 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, plan for the following chronological sequence:
  • Eastbound mainlanes of I-10 will be reduced to one alternating lane between Woodlake Parkway and just west of Loop 1604 as crews begin installing traffic barriers to implement a traffic switch to the new concrete pavement in the former center median,
  • From around 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 27, both eastbound mainlanes will be closed from FM 1516 to Loop 1604. DETOUR: All eastbound mainlane traffic will take the FM 1516 exit, travel through both the FM 1516 and Loop 1604 intersections and re-enter I-10 after Loop 1604. Police officers will be on site helping direct traffic.
  • One lane of eastbound traffic will re-open and shift to the new concrete pavement around 9 p.m. Saturday while the eastbound exit ramp from I-10 to FM 1516 will be closed to allow crews to tie the ramp into the new concrete mainlanes. DETOUR: Eastbound motorists seeking to access FM 1516 should instead exit at Loop 1604 and take the westbound frontage road back to FM 1516.
  • All eastbound mainlanes are expected to re-open by 5 a.m. Monday, July 29.
  • All southbound lanes of Loop 1604 will be closed at I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for box culvert installation. DETOUR: Southbound traffic on Loop 1604 will go west to FM 1516, turn around and travel on the eastbound I-10 frontage road to get back on Loop 1604.
  • As always, your patience is appreciated as we transform this section of I-10 from a rural four-lane highway to a modern urban full freeway. Again, this plan is weather permitting and subject to change if necessary during implementation.

I-10 Northwest Expansion Project: Out With The Old, In With The New

If you drive on I-10 in Northwest San Antonio and Bexar County often, you may have noticed a lot of activity at Boerne Stage Road.

We're actually about to hit a big milestone at that junction of the projects with the scheduled demolition of he existing Boerne Stage Road bridge/overpass, set to begin this Monday (July 8th) with completion estimated around Saturday (July 14th), weather permitting.

Our main contractor on this I-10 expansion project, Webber, will bring in a subcontractor to perform this specialized demolition to insure the work is completed safely and in a timely manner. A traffic switch will move motorists to the recently completed new outside lanes.

Located at Boerne Stage Road and Leon Creek, this switch is important to allow demolition work to begin on the existing bridges. Does the term "traffic switch” throw you off? It’s simply when traffic is redirected from one area of roadway to another section of the same roadway.

This traffic method is very beneficial because it eliminates the need for detours and full closures.

We detailed in a previous post the progress we were making on construction of the new bridges. The traffic switch will allow Webber to start in the middle of the roadway and work out towards the newly constructed lanes.

Demolition of the middle lanes will start at the bridge deck, allowing access to the bent caps and the removal of the columns.

Most of the equipment needed for this work is being staged at the bridge locations and is ready to go. In addition to demolishing the old bridges, the debris must also be removed. When completed, the old bridges will be completely gone.

As always, safety is our top priority so we remind the traveling public to watch for construction signs and to abide by work zone speed limits.

US 281 Project: Evans Road Intersection Reconstruction

If you drive up and down on US 281, no doubt you've noticed the volume of work on Phase I of the expansion project between Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway.

You may recall some weeks back our contractor reconstructed the intersection at Stone Oak to adjust to project progress (including traffic switches) and more recently, they started reconstructing the Evans Road intersection.

Step 2 of the Evans Road work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday (July 10, 2019).  Westbound traffic will be shifted south onto the newly constructed pavement while the north side of the roadway is being rebuilt (during Step 1, the eastbound direction was reduced to two lanes).

Due to the difference in elevation, there will be a reduction from three lanes to two on westbound Evans. The third lane is anticipated to be restored next month. Eastbound Evans Road will remain two lanes during this operation.

Intersection reconstruction can require multiple changes in traffic configuration to ensure construction can be completed smoothly and, more importantly, safely for drivers and construction workers.  We appreciate your patience during this time knowing this will present an inconvenience for people who live in the area.

As always, this scheduled work is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Key Pavement Repairs Prompt Closures On I-10 In Far East San Antonio

Our contractor working on the construction project to widen I-10 from Loop 410 to Loop 1604 in Far East San Antonio implemented a new traffic pattern that shifted existing eastbound mainlane traffic to a new section of pavement in the median area between WW White and Foster Road last weekend.

This process required crews to close all eastbound mainlanes, add new temporary asphalt pavement to tie or transition into the existing pavement, set barriers to guide traffic to the new pavement section and open the eastbound lanes and new temporary pavement tie-ins to traffic.

Crews have been monitoring the temporary asphalt pavement tie-ins connecting the existing mainlanes with new pavement in the median area to ensure they perform as expected during peak traffic periods.

After observing some potential issues with the temporary pavement on the eastern-most tie-in near Foster Road, crews have diverted mainlane traffic for a short distance onto the frontage road and then back onto the mainlanes to conduct maintenance work. These closures may be required tonight through tomorrow to ensure that the individual layers of hot asphalt used in the repairs have enough time to cool and harden to appropriately sustain traffic. The contractor wants to make sure to get it right.

Crews will be on standby throughout the July 4th weekend to address any additional maintenance-related issues that could arise. Additionally, as we pointed out in a previous blog post, ongoing maintenance of all temporary pavement will be required throughout the summer until traffic is shifted again and the tie-ins are no longer needed (this includes the long-term closure of the eastbound Ackerman exit). Intermittent lane closures can be expected during this time to address to address any potential necessary pavement repairs.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as our contractors continue making progress on this major highway expansion project in this area, part of the overall effort eventually extending into Guadalupe County with the goal of vastly improving mobility across the entire I-10 corridor between San Antonio and Houston.
