Long-Term Lane Closure In Effect On US 281 Segment I Expansion Project

We continue making great progress on the ever-complex US 281 Segment I Expansion Project, which involves many moving targets within its limits of Loop 1604 to just north of Stone Oak Parkway.

Work on the new mainlanes in the center continues as traffic continues to flow on the new frontage roads.

In order to keep this large-scale project on schedule, our contractor has put in effect a long-term closure of the right northbound lane between Evans Road and Encino Commons (see graphic to the right) for concrete work.

Please note that the closure is just for the right northbound lane -- all other lanes will remain open except for when they're closed during scheduled temporary closures (most of these taking place overnight).

The right northbound lane closure is full time (day and night) and is expected to last approximately two to three weeks, possibly to be extended (we'll be sure to let you know if that's the case).

As always, please remember that all closures are weather permitting and implementation and timeline are subject to change.

To stay updated on project developments, you can always come here to our blog as well as follow us on Twitter. You can also sign up for email updates right into your inbox. Just click here;

Wild Wild Far East Side: Traffic Switch Set For This Weekend On I-10 Westbound

The project to widen and reconstruct I-10 between I-410 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s Far East Side continues to progress, with our contractor currently making traffic switches left and right – literally.

Last weekend, eastbound I-10 traffic was moved from the median area to the newly reconstructed outside mainlanes and shoulders between Woodlake Parkway and Loop 1604.
That traffic switch was necessary to make way for work on the westbound mainlanes in the eastern-most section of the project area – set to kick off this weekend.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, March 13) through 5 a.m. Monday (March 16), westbound I-10 drivers can expect the following closures/sequence of activities between Loop 1604 and Woodlake Parkway as part of the next traffic switch:
  • The left westbound mainlane of I-10 will be closed from just east of Loop 1604 to just west of Woodlake Parkway as crews place barriers for the traffic switch.
  • Once all traffic barriers are in place, two westbound I-10 mainlanes will be opened to traffic in the median area and the outside mainlanes/shoulders will be closed.
  • The westbound exit ramp to FM 1516 (see photo above) will be closed as crews construct a temporary tie-in from the relocated westbound mainlanes to the exit ramp. DETOUR: Westbound I-10 mainlane drivers needing to access FM 1516 may take either the Loop 1604 exit and travel west on the frontage road to FM 1516 or take the Ackerman Road exit, turn around and travel back to FM 1516.
  • The westbound FM 1516 exit ramp will reopen as soon as the tie-in is complete, which is anticipated by no later than 5 a.m. Monday (March 16).
This weekend’s traffic switch ushers the beginning of more work to come on the westbound side of I-10.

Next weekend (starting March 20), crews will switch eastbound I-10 traffic from the median area to the outside mainlanes and shoulders between WW White and Ackerman Road. This is necessary to make yet another traffic switch the following weekend (starting March 27) to move westbound I-10 mainlane traffic to the median area.

All these moves may prompt you to ask: Are we overseeing a construction project or a game of chess? There are admittedly quite a few similarities, with a series of strategic traffic moves required to achieve the ultimate goal – in this case, to free up sections of the westbound I-10 mainlanes for reconstruction while continuously maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction.

As always, these closures are weather permitting and subject to scheduling changes.

Frontage Road Conversion, New Overpass & More: Improvements On The Way For I-35 In Comal County

If you drive often on I-35 in Northeast San Antonio and New Braunfels, you've seen improvements we're putting in place in that area.

We recently finished work on the expanded FM 1103 overpass and are currently doing frontage road work in that area as well.

Additionally, we also have relief coming to the increasingly busy I-35/FM 306 intersection, with Buc-ee's and Creekside commercial development drawing lots of traffic.

Next up, starting Monday (March 16), we're kicking off our next project in this corridor.

The new $64 million project will improve roughly six miles of I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads between FM 306 and the Hays/Comal County line.

The project is intended to improve and increase traffic capacity at various intersections and provide ramp upgrades. Estimated completion is slated for March 2023.

One of the most significant improvements is the conversion of the frontage roads from two-way traffic to one-way operation in both directions between Kohlenberg Road to the bridge crossing at Watson Lane.

The conversion will take place in the first phase of the project, ushering a speed limit reduction from 55 to 45 mph.

This will allow room to relocate frontage road traffic out towards the right-of-way to provide room for mainlane detours.

Appropriate signs, pavement markings and construction barrels will be put in place to guide traffic safely through the work zone.

Some additional project highlights:

The I-35 mainlanes at Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Road will change from an underpass to an overpass. The existing intersection will be converted to a signalized intersection with turnarounds.

A new mainlane overpass between Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Road and Watson Lane with dedicated turnarounds on the frontage roads will be built. This will be called the "Parkway intersection."

I-10 Far East San Antonio: Eastbound Traffic Switch This Weekend

As construction progresses on improvements to I-10 between I-410 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s Far East Side, eastbound drivers will soon experience another traffic pattern shift in the eastern-most portion of the project area.

Since Summer 2019, commuters have been driving on new concrete pavement in what was formerly the center median area of I-10 from just west of I-410 to Loop 1604.

The traffic switch to this new pavement is necessary to allow crews to widen and reconstruct the outside eastbound mainlanes and shoulders of I-10, a key step in achieving an ultimate I-10 footprint that includes one additional mainlane in each direction.

This weekend, eastbound mainlane traffic is scheduled to be moved from the median area back to the newly reconstructed outside mainlanes/shoulders (see picture) in the eastern-most section of the project between Woodlake Parkway and Loop 1604.

This will free up the median area pavement for a future westbound traffic shift – currently planned for next weekend – which will allow crews to begin reconstructing the outside westbound mainlanes and shoulders from Loop 1604 to Woodlake Parkway.

From 8 p.m. today (Friday, March 6) until 5 a.m. Monday (March 9), drivers in this area can expect the following closures/sequence of activities:
  • The right eastbound mainlane of I-10 will be closed from Woodlake Parkway to Loop 1604 as crews place barriers for the traffic switch.
  • The eastbound I-10 entrance ramp from Foster Road will be closed intermittently. DETOUR: During these intermittent closures, drivers needing to access the I-10 mainlanes from Foster Road must continue eastbound on the frontage road and enter the mainlanes after the Loop 1604 intersection.
  • The eastbound I-10 exit ramp to FM 1516 will be closed intermittently. DETOUR: During these intermittent closures, drivers needing to access FM 1516 from I-10 may take the Loop 1604 exit, turn around and travel back to FM 1516.
  • Once all traffic barriers are in place, two eastbound mainlanes will be opened to traffic in the outside mainlane/shoulder area and the eastbound mainlanes in the median area will be closed.
  • The existing eastbound entrance ramp from Foster Road will also be closed and a new entrance ramp will open just east of Woodlake Parkway.
Following the traffic switch, drivers needing to access the I-10 mainlanes from Foster Road must continue eastbound on the frontage road and enter the mainlanes after Woodlake Parkway.

Additional traffic shifts in both directions will be required as new sections of concrete pavement are completed.

Hill Country News: RM 1376 Full Closure Over Spring Break

If you live in or drive up in the Hill Country often, this one's for you.

Particularly for those who often make the drive between Boerne and Sisterdale, please be aware that our contractor on the RM 1376 project, Curran, will be doing a full roadway closure in both directions in a portion of this roadway.

The full roadway closure will take place in a 1/2-mile section starting just north of Wasp Creek Road, starting on Saturday, March 7 through Sunday, March 15.

The roadway will actually remain open to local traffic outside of the closure area. That means between Boerne and Wasp Creek Road and between Sisterdale down to the closure section.

However, folks intending of making the usual drive on RM 1376 between Boerne and Sisterdale will be diverted to an established detour using FM 474 and FM 473 (see map).

This closure is being put in place during Spring Break, when there is a reduction in regular traffic. The reason the contractor is doing a full closure in both directions is to expedite the widening of the roadway to enhance safety for the traveling public. Additionally, workers will be installing new guard fence in this area.

Other alternatives to the full closure were considered but they would have implied closures during a longer period of time, which would not serve the public well since safety enhancements cannot wait.

We understand this will cause an inconvenience to drivers, particularly to locals used to the trip between Boerne and Sisterdale on RM 1376. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we our best to improve this roadway in a timely manner.

As always, this scheduled closure is weather permitting and subject to change.
