Traffic Switch in Boerne: SH 46 (River Road) Will See Minimal Impact

Heads-up to all our folks who live in or usually drive through the heart of beautiful Boerne!

Traffic switch time on the ongoing project in town.

Starting this Monday (December 23), traffic on SH 46 (River Road) will be switched to the north side of the road onto newly constructed pavement east of the Esperanza Boulevard intersection.

The traffic switch will continue through the Ammann Road intersection and end roughly a quarter mile east of that intersection.

Important! The lane configurations at both the Esperanza Boulevard and Ammann Raod intersections are not changing -- meaning you'll have the same capacity as you have now.

Also, we would like to emphasize that the designated left turn lanes at Esperanza Boulevard are remaining in place.

We appreciate your continued patience and, as always, we cannot stress enough the importance of safety for everyone (the traveling public as well as work crews) within the construction zone. Please remember to either move over and/or slow down when approaching crews -- it's the law.

Happy Holidays and be safe out there!

Switching Things Up: Next Milestone On Loop 337 Project in New Braunfels

Following rush hour tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 21) morning, the newly constructed southbound Loop 337 lanes between New Braunfels High School (north of the SH 46 overpass) and just south of Oak Run Parkway will open to drivers as the latest in a series of scheduled traffic switches on the Loop 337 Expansion Project.

All southbound traffic will be permanently shifted to the new lanes. Once this section has opened, crews will begin work on existing lanes, with one northbound lane remaining open to traffic.

Following the traffic switch, drivers turning from Oak Run Parkway will only be able to head southbound on Loop 337. Drivers wishing to head north on Loop 337 will need to take southbound Loop 337 and turn around at Stone Crossing.

This section of southbound Loop 337 is the last to open as part of this project. Crews will continue working on sections of northbound Loop 337 and making additional improvements in future phases of this project.

Message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to help guide drivers safely along the roadway.

We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain alert when traveling through the work zone. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the Loop 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is estimated to be completed in late 2021. The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive, and includes an upgrade to a 4-lane divided roadway with pedestrian accommodations and new bridges in various locations.

A Turn For The Best: New Turnarounds Opening On US 281 Expansion Project

We're on a roll with good news for US 281 drivers!

Earlier today we let you know about the scheduled opening of the new northbound Redland Road bypass/bridge as well as the new Redland Road intersection below the bridge, both scheduled to roll out Monday (November 25) morning.

That same morning, all scheduled for morning rush hour opening, we also plan to unveil two new turnaround locations on US 281

The US 281 north- to southbound turnaround at Encino Rio will open. Northbound traffic will be able to merge into the leftmost lane to make an easy turnaround.

Also opening is the US 281 south- to northbound turnaround at Redland Road. Southbound commuters will be able to merge into the left-most lane and drive under the new Redland Road bypass bridge to avoid turning left at the signalized intersection.

As we open these turnarounds, we will also close the temporary turnarounds in between Redland and Encino Rio.

Please note that construction is weather permitting and subject to change.

Looking Up: New Redland Road Bypass & Intersection at US 281 Set To Open

Ready for some good news on the ongoing US 281 Expansion Project?

Come Tuesday (December 3) morning prior to rush hour, drivers will notice a traffic pattern change on the northbound lanes at Redland Road.

If you drive this stretch of highway often, surely you've noticed the new bypass/bridge at Redland being built.

Well, now it's ready for you to start driving on it.

As you'll notice starting Tuesday, when you approach the intersection, the left frontage road lane will actually take drivers up on the bridge while the other two lanes will remain open beneath on the frontage road – as shown in the Step 1 diagram above.

Drivers will have this temporary configuration with just the left lane going up to the bypass with the remaining two down below for approximately three weeks.

That time allows crews to continue work at this location leading up to the implementation of the next step, as shown on the right in the Step 2 diagram.

Once work for Step 1 is complete, both left and center lanes of the frontage road will go up on the bypass, with the center lane having the option to go either up on the bypass or remain down below on the frontage road.

The right frontage road lane has the option to continue ahead or also break off for a right turn onto Redland Road.

But wait -- there's even more good news! Along with the addition of a second lane opening up on the bypass, Step 2 also includes the opening of the underpass intersection at Redland Road -- meaning drivers wishing to do so will be able to turn left under the bridge and turn around to head south on US 281.

It also means that drivers coming down on Redland will no longer need to head up north to reach a turnaround -- they'll be able to go under the bridge and take a left onto 281 southbound.

So those traffic lights you had been seeing at the intersection not yet working will be fully functional in both directions starting Tuesday morning.

As always, this planned bypass and new intersection opening are weather permitting and subject to change.

Beam Me Up: Overpass Work On I-10 East Project Prompts FM 1516 Closure

Continued work on a new overpass/bridge on the I-10 expansion project in Far East San Antonio will require overnight closures of FM 1516 Tuesday (November 19) through early Thursday morning (November 21).

Our contractor on this project, Webber, will be installing large beams on the I-10 overpass at FM 1516.

This work will require nightly closures of the FM 1516 intersection underneath the I-10 mainlanes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, November 19 through Thursday, November 21.

Please see the adjacent map and details on detour routes during this closure:
  • Southbound through traffic on FM 1516 will be diverted to the westbound frontage road and turn around at Foster Road, then take the eastbound frontage road back to FM 1516.
  • Northbound through traffic on FM 1516 will be diverted to the eastbound frontage road and turn around at Loop 1604, then take the westbound frontage road back to FM 1516.
Police officers will be directing traffic on the frontage roads at the FM 1516 intersections but delays are still possible. Please consider using alternative routes during this time, if possible.

As always, we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we continue making progress s on the I-10 expansion project in Far East San Antonio, which goes from I-410 to Loop 1604.

Making It Right: Addressing Turn Lane Concerns On SH 46 Project In Boerne

Greetings to everyone who lives in or drives through beautiful Boerne, Texas!

Our contractor on the SH 46 (River Road), Hunter Industries, continues to make good progress on this expansion project.

We know that drivers have had to be patient, particularly in terms of the intersection work the project has included.

Though original project plans had the dedicated right-turn lane from SH 46 to Herff Ranch Road taken away early on for the duration of the project, we've worked closely with Hunter to come up with alternatives in order to provide as much relief as possible during construction to the traveling public.

That's why folks may have noticed that this right-turn lane was given back last week (see illustration above). Even better news is that Hunter is pledging to keep it open for the foreseeable future, with some exceptions during off-peak hours when it will have to be closed for further intersection work.

However, we do want you to know that at some point close to project completion that right-turn lane will be taken away permanently. That's because the final configuration has two fully-flowing lanes in each direction for the length of the project (from Esser Road to Ammann Road).

As shown in the illustration to the left, this final configuration will also include a continuous left-turn lane in the middle that goes through the SH 46 & Herff Ranch intersection.

We do understand and recognize that closing the right-turn lane has presented an inconvenience,  particularly to local residents trying to make their way to and from Cibolo Creek Elementary School. Again, that's why we have worked closely with Hunter to do our best to alleviate congestion -- never an easy task in the middle of the construction work zone.

Hunter will still be needing frequent use of this intersection for equipment staging while completing remaining sidewalks, concrete rip rap and traffic lights.

Once that work is complete, the right eastbound lane will be opened. We appreciate your continued understanding and patience. Keep in mind that ensuring everyone's safety (from work crews to commuters) is always our top priority.
