US 281 Phase I Expansion Project: Next Phase Of Evans Road Intersection Reconstruction

The gradual reconstruction of the US 281 & Evans Road intersection (part of the US 281 Phase I Expansion Project which goes from Loop 1604 to just north of Stone Oak Parkway) continues this weekend, prompting the need for temporary closures.

For this work, our contractor will need to reduce the westbound and eastbound lanes of Evans Road (east of US 281) down to one lane in each direction.

Work to construct the north end of Evans Road will take place over this weekend, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, (September 20) until 5 a.m. Monday (September 23).

Two lanes of eastbound Evans and three lanes of westbound Evans will be restored by Monday morning’s commute. This work will complete the phasing of Evans Road on the east side of the intersection with US 281.

Intersection reconstruction can require multiple changes in traffic configuration to ensure construction can be completed smoothly and, more importantly, safely for drivers and construction workers. Please always remember to move over/slow down when approaching crews -- it's the law.

Want all bases covered in terms of keeping up with this construction project? Besides our blog and following us on social media, you can also get email alerts on upcoming closures. Here's the link to sign up: http://eepurl.com/cXz2kr.

As always, any scheduled work is weather permitting and subject to change.

US 281 Expansion Phase II: Traffic Switch On Wilderness Oak

If you follow our blog regularly, you're likely used to hearing from us about construction on the US 281 Expansion Project.

Until now, most of the news out of that project has focused on Phase I, which started in 2017 and which goes from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway. There's definitely still lots of activity in that stretch, but those of you who frequently travel further north have likely noticed an uptick in work up there as well.

That's part of Phase II, which started this Spring and it picks up construction from Stone Oak Parkway up until the Bexar/Comal county line.

Thus far that project hasn't had much impact on the traveling public because work has focused on building the new southbound frontage road with minimal needed closures. If you live in or near Wilderness Oak, you likely noticed a discernible change on that street off the highway. It's what we typically call a "traffic switch," whereby drivers are diverted to one side of the road so crews can work on the closed-off portion.

The point is to ensure the highest safety both for crews working behind barrier as well as the traveling public. Here are more details about this switch (see map for visual detail:

• Before: Wilderness Oak was divided by a median, two eastbound lanes and two lanes at US 281.

• Currently: Wilderness Oak westbound lanes are closed off and shifted south of the median, so traffic will now be two-way undivided flow (one eastbound lane and one westbound lane).

Our contractor has placed electronic message boards along southbound US 281 prior to Wilderness Oak indicating “New Traffic Pattern” and on eastbound Wilderness Oak: "Two Way Traffic Ahead/ Stay Right."

The project is progressing well. Once the contractor finishes the new southbound frontage road, the next phase will be construction of the new northbound frontage road. Then, crews will move to the middle for the expansion of the mainlanes. which will keep two general purpose lanes plus one new HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane in each direction.

I-10 & SH 46 In Boerne: 'Split Phase' Signal To Alleviate Backups

It was a tough call.

As part of our project on I-10 improvements between Scenic Loop Road and SH 46 in Boerne, our contractor (Texas Sterling Construction Company) has been steadily working on the retaining wall at the I-10 & SH 46 intersection, part of the work on that overpass and new turnaround bridges.

The tough part of this measure in terms of impact on the traveling public was that it had to take away the dedicated left-turn lane on northbound SH 46 at the overpass to get onto the I-10 westbound frontage road. That in turn created significant backups at the intersection and beyond.

That was the bad news -- now time for some good news.

Even though it was temporary for this phase of construction, we determined the backups had to be addressed now and not left for later.

Hence the decision to bring back the northbound SH 46 dedicated left-turn option, using what our traffic folks call "split phasing."

What does this mean? While the full dedicated left-turn lane still cannot be brought back, drivers at least will not have to keep waiting for their southbound counterparts to clear out before being able to turn. Instead, they'll have a protected turn arrow while southbound traffic waits for the light to change (see graphic for details).

The split-phase traffic light phasing change is being put in place today (Monday, September 9).

As with just about everything else in traffic configurations, there's an upside and downside. In the case of this intersection, putting in place the protected turn arrow will of course give northbound SH 46 drivers better and quicker access to I-10 westbound. But it also means more overall delays as southbound SH 46 drivers will now have to wait their turn to go.

So again, it's all about give and take. We're hoping at least the overall flow at the intersection will improve with this move, resulting in great part from us taking public sentiment and input to heart.

Ready For This? Series Of Overnight Closures Next Week On I-10 In Far East San Antonio

Engineering fans, geek out on this.

Our ongoing work on the I-10 mainlane expansion project in Far East San Antonio will require a complex series of overnight closures of Ackerman Road, I-10 westbound mainlanes and ramps connecting I-410 and I-10.

The process entails closures and detours revealing a method to the madness that we attempt to unpack for you here.

For starters, if you drive this are often you already know that the eastbound I-10 exit ramp to Ackerman Road remains closed to traffic while crews work on the outside eastbound mainlanes. We bring that up not just as a reminder but also for context, since this ongoing closure further complicates these additional steps that need be taken now.

There is good news out of all of this, believe it or not -- next week’s closures are temporary and will only impact overnight traffic, plus let’s not forget that an additional (third) westbound I-10 mainlane will be opened to traffic following this work.

For those whose night travels will take them through the area during the closure period, we’ve prepared a navigation guide to help you reach your destination as quickly and painlessly as possible:

Closures of I-410 Ramps to Eastbound I-10 – Overnight Sunday, Sept. 8
Crews will be closing both the northbound and southbound I-410 ramps connecting to eastbound I-10 from 7 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 8) through 5 a.m. Monday (Sept. 9) morning to make needed asphalt repairs. Only one ramp will be closed at a time.

NORTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: Northbound I-410 drivers accessing eastbound I-10 will take the cloverleaf exit ramp to westbound I-10, stay in the right lane and take the next cloverleaf ramp to southbound I-410, then take a third and final cloverleaf ramp from southbound I-410 to eastbound I-10 (see map below).

SOUTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: Southbound I-410 traffic needing to access eastbound I-10 will stay on I-410, exit at FM 1346/E. Houston St., turn around, enter the northbound I-410 mainlanes and take the connecting ramp to eastbound I-10 (see map below).

Closures of Ackerman Road at I-10 – Overnight Monday, Sept. 9 & Tuesday, Sept. 10

Crews will be placing beams for the I-10 bridge over Ackerman Road on Monday and Tuesday nights, which will require the closure of Ackerman Road in both directions under I-10 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night.

DETOUR: Northbound Ackerman Road traffic will take the I-10 eastbound frontage road to Foster Road, turn around and take the I-10 westbound frontage road back to Ackerman Road. Southbound Ackerman Road traffic will take the I-10 westbound entrance ramp just west of Ackerman, stay in the right lane, take the I-410 South connecting ramp, travel southbound on I-410, exit to FM 1346/E. Houston St., turn around and take the northbound frontage road back to Ackerman Road (map below).

Closures of I-10 Westbound Mainlanes & I-410 to Westbound I-10 Ramps – Overnight Wednesday, Sept. 11

Crews will be restriping the westbound I-10 mainlanes at I-410 on Wednesday night to allow for the opening of an additional (third) lane to traffic traveling westbound from I-410. This will require a two-phased closure that will be in place from 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 until 5 a.m. Thursday, September 12.

Phase 1: Beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, all I-10 westbound mainlanes will be closed between the exit ramp to I-410 and the I-10 westbound entrance ramp located just west of the I-410 interchange as crews restripe the left lane.

DETOUR: All westbound I-10 traffic will be directed to the I-410 exit ramp, stay left on the parallel collector-distributor road that travels under I-410 and re-enter I-10 westbound just west of I-410 (map below).

Phase 2: Once the left (inside) westbound mainlane of I-10 has been restriped, that single lane will be reopened to traffic and the westbound parallel collector-distributor road that travels under I-410 will be closed at the I-410 interchange. The ramps connecting I-410 to westbound I-10 will also be closed (map below).

WESTBOUND I-10 DETOUR: All I-10 westbound through-traffic will be directed to the left (inside) mainlane.

I-10 In Far East San Antonio: Extended Closure At Woodlake Parkway

As part of our ongoing construction expansion project on the mainlanes and frontage roads of I-10 in Far East San Antonio, we wanted to give folks a heads-up on an upcoming closure on Woodlake Parkway that will impact the Horizon Pointe Subdivision.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 9, Woodlake Parkway will be closed at the I-10 westbound frontage road. This temporary closure will last approximately two weeks -- it's scheduled to end at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 27.

During this closure, Horizon Pointe residents wishing to access the subdivision will continue traveling on the westbound frontage road, turn right on Foster Road and take another right on Sierra Sunset to return to Woodlake Parkway (see map).

As always, we're thankful for your patience as we continue this expansion and improvements work along I-10 East between Foster Road and Graytown Road.

As a reminder, the frontage road project led by contractor Texas Sterling Construction Company includes:
  • Conversion of two-way frontage roads to one-way.
  • Reconfiguration of entrance and exit ramps.
  • Construction of a new overpass at Woodlake Parkway.
  • Construction of a new ground-level intersection at Graytown Road.
  • Intersection improvements at Foster Road, FM 1516 and Loop 1604.
The growing pain associated with construction, including closures and detours, will eventually give to a better and safer roadway and intersections.

In trying to meet the increased mobility and infrastructure needs of this rapidly-growing area, the project is converting frontage roads from two-way traffic to one-way traffic -- much like we're doing on I-10 on the other end of town (the corridor between Northwest San Antonio and Boerne).

Research shows that there’s a significant reduction in the number, type and severity of crashes on one-way frontage roads. The conversion to a one-way format is already in place while construction continues on the frontage roads and the new bridge/overpass at Woodlake Parkway is nearly complete.

I-410/US 90 Interchange Project: Marbach Road Closed This Weekend For Bridge Demo Work

Heads up on construction work taking place on the I-410/US 90 interchange project this weekend!

Starting this Friday (9/6) at 8 p.m. until Monday (9/9) at 5 a.m., the intersection of Marbach Road at I-410 will be closed in both directions to demolish the old Marbach Road bridge.

The left I-410 mainlane in both directions will also be closed.

Here's the breakdown of the impact of this scheduled work on the roadways:

Marbach Road
Drivers on Marbach Road will not be able to go under the bridge. All traffic will have to turn right onto the I-410 frontage road.

I-410
Traffic on the frontage road will not be able to turn left to go under the bridge. The straight- and right-turn lanes will remain open.

As always, scheduled closures are weather permitting and subject to change.

Loop 337 In New Braunfels: New Southbound Lanes Set To Open

More great news on the way for New Braunfels drivers facing unprecedented traffic due to the city's continued population growth.

After rush hour tomorrow morning, (Wednesday, September 4) the newly-constructed Loop 337 southbound lanes between Oak Run Parkway and San Antonio Street will open to traffic.

All southbound traffic will be permanently shifted to the new lanes, what we typically call a "traffic switch."  Once this section has opened, crews will begin work on the existing lanes, with one northbound lane remaining open to traffic.

A newly-constructed southbound access ramp for Landa Street on southbound Loop 337 will also be opened. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 from Landa Street, or wishing to access Landa Street, from southbound Loop 337 will need to use the new access road (see illustrations). Access to northbound SL 337 from Landa Street will not change.

Following the traffic shift, drivers turning from Ridge Hill Drive will only be able to head north on Loop 337. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 will need to take northbound Loop 337 and turn around at the SH 46 interchange. Southbound traffic on Loop 337 looking to turn onto Ridge Hill Drive will temporarily need to use the new southbound exit to Landa Street, then use the north access ramp to northbound Loop 337.

Electronic message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to further guide drivers We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain aware to move over if possible or at least slow down when approaching work crews. As always, weather may impact the timing of these openings. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the SL 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021. The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive, and includes an upgrade from a 2-lane roadway to a 4-lane divided roadway with new sidewalks and new bridges in various locations.

Back in April, crews opened the southbound lanes on SL 337 from River Road to SH 46. In May, a similar switch occurred between Hanz Drive and Rock Street. The new exit ramp at Gruene Road was also opened. Work on the northbound lanes will continue during this next phase of construction.

US 281 Expansion Project Update: Sonterra Entrance Ramp Reopens!

Important milestone for those seeking traffic relief on the US 281 Expansion Project!

Those of you that frequent this major highway likely know that both northbound Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp as well as southbound Sonterra Boulevard entrance ramp have been closed for the long term.

That measure needed to be put in place to safely put in place beams for the new direct connectors (flyovers) connecting US 281 with Loop 1604.

In the case of the Sonterra southbound entrance ramp, it had been closed for construction of the new direct connectors going from US 281 southbound to Loop 1604 eastbound and westbound.

We're now happy to announce that the Sonterra southbound entrance ramp is scheduled to reopen tomorrow (Wednesday, September 4)!

Why did we need to have it closed in the first place, you ask? Well, that was to allow work crews to work safely behind barrier while constructing retaining wall, drainage crossings and direct connector structures beside and over the ramp (we would never want to risk objects falling from up above onto moving cars below) as well as reconstruction and realignment of the ramp itself.

So that's happening. But what about the Sonterra northbound exit ramp, you're wondering? That remains closed at this time (Frontage Road exit continues being your best alternative) but our contractor anticipates that it will reopen toward the end of this year.

While we're at it, a quick reminder that there's one more traffic switch associated with this Phase I (between Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway) of the US 281 Expansion Project. There's one in place in both southern and northern ends of the project.

The last one will take place in the middle, at Evans Road. As with the previous switches, this will also involve diverting traffic off the existing mainlanes and onto the newly-built frontage roads (in both directions. There's no date set yet for this last switch but it should come in the next two to three months.

Meantime, besides keeping it here on our blog or on our very active Twitter platform, don't forget that you can also sign up for e-mail updates on this project including scheduled closures so you can plan ahead. Here's the link to sign up: http://eepurl.com/cXz2kr).

As always, please recall that any scheduled work is always weather permitting and subject to change.
