Temporary Traffic Switch On I-10/SH 46 Project In Boerne

We're making great inroads on the SH 46 underpass, part of the work on our western-most construction project on the I-10 corridor going from Northwest San Antonio to the City of Boerne.

This project, spearheaded by our contractor Texas Sterling Company, goes from Cascade Cavern/Scenic Loop to SH 46.

As part of the aforementioned underpass work, Texas Sterling will have to temporarily (approximately 2-3 months) shift or displace traffic to one side, what we typically call a "traffic switch." This is scheduled be implemented overnight tonight (Tuesday October 22) and become effective tomorrow morning.

Texas Sterling will need to divert I-10 westbound traffic from the mainlanes to the temporary pavement in the median. As part of this work, the eastbound mainlanes will be reopened.

This traffic switch is designed to minimize mainlane closures and allow the contractor to safely construct and complete these structures during daylight hours, which is most productive and safer.

Roadway Reconfiguration Chronology

1.) Temporary closure of westbound mainlanes from Christus Parkway to Frederick Creek.

2.) Westbound traffic will be diverted to the temporary pavement in the median (westbound entrance ramp near Cascade Cavern remains open).

3.) Eastbound mainlanes reopened.

What to Expect

Drivers should expect slight traffic delays in the area. They should use caution and pay attention to traffic signs (including electronic message boards).

As always, this scheduled traffic switch is weather permitting and subject to schedule changes.

A Reason To Smile! US 281 & Evans To Open Up Early

How about some good news for a change?

As we had previously mentioned, the US 281 Segment 1 Expansion Project (from Loop 1604 to just north of Stone Oak Parkway) saw a traffic switch last weekend at the Evans Road intersection.

That was followed by an ongoing closure of the intersection this week as crews worked on reconstructing it in order to accommodate the coming mainlane expansion.

That intersection closure was scheduled to last through Monday, but our contractor just informed us that they worked hard during this week and they anticipate being done overnight tonight (Friday October 18).

That means the intersection should be open to traffic by tomorrow (Saturday, October 19) morning!

We appreciate your patience while we worked hard to restore this access earlier than expected. Once the intersections reopens, drivers will be able to once again turn left from US 281 to go north- to westbound or south- to eastbound on Evans Road.

As always, we appreciate your patience. Please note that all construction is weather permitting and subject to change.

Progress Report: Traffic Switch On Hausman Expansion Project

We are continuing to make headway on the FM 1560 (Hausman Road) expansion project between SH 16 (Bandera Road) and LP 1604.

As you may have noticed, work on the southbound side of the project is winding down and the contractor is shifting focus to the northbound side. In order to do so, traffic will be switched to the newly-paved lanes between Bandera and Magnolia Way.

The traffic switch will take place after rush hour on Monday (October 21) and will usher the long-term closure of the middle continuous left-turn lane (see illustration). That means two-way (no middle lane) traffic between Bandera and Magnolia Way.

We understand this move will likely cause an inconvenience but it's crucial that this measure be put in place for the timely completion of the project.

Taking into account the inconvenience, we've instructed the contractor to take all steps possible to at least accommodate folks who live along the work zone on Hausman who may be used to having that middle turn lane to access their subdivisions.

To avoid abrupt stops to traffic flow in keeping in mind these local residents, the contractor is maintaining  designated left-turn lanes to the following subdivisions: Cedar Point, Helotes Trail and Magnolia Way.

Once the switch is complete, construction crews will have the necessary space to complete improvements to underground water and storm drainage networks, soundwalls, sidewalks and pavement on the northbound side of the roadway.

Remember, with each traffic switch we are getting closer to that finish line!

As always, we remind everyone that that this switch is weather permitting and subject to scheduling change.

Major Closure Scheduled This Weekend At The DLT (Loop 1604 & Bandera Road)

This is not how we planned it, but as we know all too well around here, construction projects literally are works in progress.
After some initial jitters, drivers have overwhelmingly taken to the new intersection configuration at Loop 1604 and SH 16 (Bandera Road). Dubbed a "Displaced Left Turn" or "DLT," this innovative design is growing in popularity since it has proven to both reduce congestion and increase safety.
So far that has proven true at the 1604 & Bandera DLT, which coincidentally is the first of its kind for us in the TxDOT San Antonio District. The next one will be a partial DLT at the intersection of I-35 and FM 306 in Comal County.
So all that is good news. The bad news is that, just like we did when we first opened up at 1604 & Bandera back in April, this weekend we'll have to close the intersection again -- for paving work. Closure hours will be Friday (Oct. 18) at 9 p.m. through Monday (Oct. 21) at 5 a.m.
The logistics and process for the closure will be similar. The intersection will be closed to through-traffic in all directions. Drivers going north and south on Bandera will have to detour around 1604 to get back on.
Basically, at the intersection itself drivers will only be able to make right turns in all directions.
Traffic on 1604 mainlanes will be able to go straight through (over Bandera) as before. Note: traffic on 1604 frontage roads in both directions will be detoured at the intersection.
As we announced many (many!) times leading up to the opening and steadfastly since then, we'd like to remind drivers that with the new layout, there are no longer left turns from Bandera to 1604 under the overpass (that's what the dedicated DLT lanes are for, as well as to ensure nonstop traffic on Bandera through the intersection).
Also as before, our contractor (Harper Brothers) will have off-duty police officers stationed at all corners to assist with traffic flow. Harper also has in place several electronic message boards on 1604 and on Bandera alerting drivers of the closure.
Please see below for updated detour maps (click on them individually for bigger resolution) so you can plan your route ahead of time. However, as we did last time, we do encourage folks if they can to avoid this area over the weekend because delays are expected, particularly on Bandera.
On the bright side, if you can't avoid the intersection this weekend, unlike back in April, this time drivers who use this intersection frequently at least are used to the new configuration and should no longer have fear of the unknown.

The project is in full swing, as many of you know if you frequently drive on this major highway in the San Antonio area. Phase I of the expansion goes from Loop 1604 to just north of Stone Oak Parkway.

In order to get into the nitty gritty of the Evans overpass construction, our contractor will need to put in place the third major traffic switch of the project.

You'll recall the previous two switches respectively targeted the southern and northern ends of the project. The remaining portion in the middle is at the US 281 intersection at Evans Road.

Beginning at 9 p.m. this Friday, October 11, northbound and southbound US 281 traffic at Evans Road will be shifted from the existing mainlanes to the newly constructed frontage roads on the outside so crews can work on the overpass in the middle (again, same approach as the previous switches diverting drivers to the new frontage roads to allow work on the expanded mainlanes in the middle).

Also as before, the switch will be gradually rolled out through Friday night into Saturday, October 12. If all goes well, it should be completed no later than Saturday evening.

Please note that there will be a reduction in speed in this area, dropping from 60 to 45 mph. As with the previous switches, drivers will have the same number of lanes so there's no loss of capacity.

After the traffic switch is complete, reconstruction of the US 281 and Evans Road intersection will begin between the newly built frontage roads. This construction is anticipated to take approximately one week.

During this time, the northbound to westbound and the southbound to eastbound turn lanes at Evans Road and US 281 will be closed. Drivers will need to take the next turnaround and turn right. Heavy traffic is expected in the area so please allow plenty of time to get to your destination or seek alternate routes.

A new timing phase for traffic lights will be implemented for the route. Timing will be monitored and adjusted accordingly to optimize traffic flow.

This traffic switch ushers the completion of the first phase US 281 Segment 1 Expansion project. As we move into Phase 2, we will continue to update the public on the progress of the project. As always, we appreciate your patience.

Please note that this switch is weather permitting and subject to change.

Filling The Gap: Eastbound Traffic Switch On I-10 In Far East San Antonio Set For This Weekend

Remember the two traffic pattern changes (“switches”) that were put in place earlier this summer as part of the I-10 expansion project between I-410 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s Far East Side? Our contractor is now gearing up for the third in a series of eastbound switches called for in the project plans.

As you may recall, the point of these switches are to temporarily redirect traffic off an area of the highway in order for crews to get access to that area. In our case for this project, the switches divert  eastbound mainlane drivers to new concrete pavement in the former center median.

The first two switches occurred on both the west and east ends of the work zone -- from I-410 to Rosillo Creek and from Woodlake Parkway to Loop 1604, respectively. The third switch planned for this weekend will complete the gap in the middle section of the project area from Rosillo Creek to Woodlake Parkway.

Luckily, this upcoming switch is fairly straight forward and it will allow crews to smooth out some curves in the roadway.

Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, October 11, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 14, please plan for the following chronological sequence of activities and closures:
  • All I-10 eastbound mainlanes will be closed at the Foster Road exit as crews set barriers for the traffic switch. One eastbound mainlane will also be closed from the Ackerman Road entrance ramp (just west of Foster Road) to Woodlake Parkway. DETOUR: All mainlane traffic will exit to Foster Road and immediately take the next entrance ramp from Ackerman Road, reentering to a single eastbound mainlane of I-10.
  • Once barriers are in place, one eastbound mainlane of traffic will reopen at the Foster Road exit and switch to the new concrete pavement in the center median area. All existing eastbound mainlanes will close from Rosillo Creek to Woodlake Parkway. The existing eastbound entrance ramp from Ackerman Road will also be closed at this time to allow crews to connect a temporary entrance ramp to the new concrete pavement. DETOUR: Drivers seeking to enter I-10 mainlanes from Ackerman Road will stay on the frontage road, travel through the Foster Road intersection and reenter the highway east of Foster Road.
  • Two eastbound mainlanes and the temporary entrance ramp from Ackerman Road are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday (October 14).
Once this switch is complete, all I-10 eastbound traffic will be traveling on one seamless section of new pavement between I-410 and Loop 1604, allowing construction crews to work on the outside mainlanes and shoulders throughout the entire corridor.

Police officers will be on site during this switch to help guide traffic and ensure as smooth transition as possible. As a reminder, this mainlane expansion project will add capacity through additional travel lanes and various reconstructed bridges/overpasses.

Construction Ramps Up On I-35 In New Braunfels/Comal County

The bad news:  The entrance ramp to I-35 northbound after Business 35 (near South Kowald Lane) in New Braunfels is closing.

The good news:  It’s only for a couple of months.

If only it were that simple.

The I-35 northbound entrance ramp – located directly after North Business 35 (in front of the Evergreen RV Center) – will be closed for approximately two months, starting at 9 a.m. this Monday, Oct. 7.

This ramp closure is necessary while crews (here’s the “wish it were that simple” part) replace the entrance ramp with an exit ramp.

That’s right, we are reversing the ramp at that location. It is part of a series of operational and safety improvement projects taking place on I-35 in Comal County.

Before we talk more about the big picture, drivers should know that during this two-month ramp closure they should use the next entrance ramp located right up the road just south of FM 306/Creekside Crossing (the Buc-ee’s intersection), as illustrated in the map below.

The ramp closure is expected to end in early December -- that's also when the new exit ramp is scheduled to open.

So, back to the big picture for inquiring minds: This ramp closure and ramp reversal is part of a larger project that started a couple of weeks ago and which has an estimated completion date of March 2021.

The overall purpose of this project involves rehab of I-35 mainlanes between the Guadalupe River and FM 306, relocation and reversal of ramps and improvements to the I-35 & FM 306 intersection (with construction of a partial Displaced Left Turn or DLT) configuration.

We just recently opened up the first (full) DLT in the San Antonio District at Loop 1604 and SH 16 (Bandera Road) in Northwest San Antonio/Helotes. The unique set-up confused first-time drivers but since then the community has really taken to it and in just a few months we've already seen a drastic reduction in congestion at that extremely busy intersection.

Beyond those major facts about this improvement project, there is a significant milestone to keep in mind -- the reconstruction of the I-35 northbound-to-southbound turnaround at FM 306 tentatively scheduled for September 2020. Though it's still too soon to tell, project managers expect the turnaround to be closed for up to one month.

You may be asking yourself -- why replace that entrace ramp in front of the Evergreen RV Center? Why engage in these other ramp reversals as well?

Glad you asked. Main reason: Safety. Right now, the level of congestion and crashes on the I-35 northbound frontage road at FM 306 is high.

Reversal of the ramp in front of the RV center is the precursor for changes coming to the I-35 & FM 306 intersection described above, with the new DLT configuration expected to both enhance safety and reduce congestion at this intersection that New Braunfels folks have known for quite some time to be really busy.

Ultimately, all these changes will result in traffic being able to exit from I-35 northbound further away from the intersection, which will allow drivers more time and distance to weave and change lanes before getting to the intersection.

As always, thanks for your patience and understanding as we know you'll be inconvenienced as construction ramps up on this project.
