Major Mainlane Closures On I-10 In Far East San Antonio

Drivers on I-10 in Far East San Antonio towards Seguin can expect delays over the next two weekends as construction continues between I-410 and Loop 1604 in this expansion project. Full mainlane closures will be required on both the west and east ends of the work zone to allow our contractors to install stormwater drainage systems underneath I-10. 

All westbound I-10 mainlanes are scheduled to be closed between Loop 1604 and FM 1516 from 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28. Westbound drivers will exit the mainlanes at Loop 1604, take the frontage road through the Loop 1604 and FM 1516 intersections and re-enter the mainlanes west of FM 1516 (see map below).

On Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m., all eastbound mainlanes are scheduled to be closed on I-10 at the I-410 interchange. Eastbound traffic will detour to Exit 581 (the I-410/Ackerman road exit) and continue traveling east on the connector road that runs parallel to the mainlanes. Although the connector will be reduced to one lane, drivers will be able to re-enter the mainlanes just east of I-410 without having to travel through any roadway intersections (see below).

On Saturday, Feb. 2, from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m., all westbound mainlanes will be closed in the same area between Ackerman Road and I-410. Westbound traffic will detour to Exit 581 (the I-410 exit) and continue traveling west on the connector road that runs parallel to the mainlanes, with traffic reduced to one lane. Drivers then will re-enter the mainlanes just west of I-410, as depicted here:

Additional I-10 East traffic updates will be included in the list of upcoming construction-related closures to be posted in the regular closures post on Friday. As always, traffic closures and detours are weather permitting and subject to change.

US 281 Project Milestone: Traffic Switch In Both Directions

This weekend (starting Saturday Jan. 26 after midnight) we'll be putting in place a traffic switch in both directions of US 281 between Evans Road and Northwind Boulevard/Marshall Road (see graphic below for visual details). 

Basically, drivers will be diverted off the existing mainlanes onto the newly-built frontage roads so that crews can begin work on mainlane expansion in this portion of the project. It's the same step we took previously with traffic switches between Sonterra and Encino Rio. 

Due to the complexity of the traffic switch, crews will be working all weekend. Switch operations begin on Saturday at 3 a.m. and will be completed by Monday, Jan. 28, at 5 a.m.

During that Monday morning commute, drivers will be riding on new asphalt pavement on the frontage roads for this stretch. Please note that there will be a reduction in speed on the stretch of roadway, dropping from 60 mph to 45 mph (per regulations, since it's frontage road and not mainlane travel). The number lanes will remain consistent with the current roadway, meaning there will not be a reduction of travel lanes during the months-long switch.

After the traffic switch is complete, we will need to reconstruct the Stone Oak Parkway/TPC Parkway intersection between the newly built frontage roads. This will take approximately one week to complete. 

During this time the northbound to westbound as well as the southbound to eastbound turn lanes at Stone Oak Parkway/TPC Parkway will be closed. Traffic will need to take the next turnaround on US 281 just north of the intersection. Heavy traffic is expected during this operation so please allow plenty of time to get to your destination or seek alternate routes (see picture below for visual details).

A new timing phase for traffic signals will be implemented throughout this closure and signals will be monitored and adjusted accordingly to maintain as smooth traffic flow as possible.

As always, weather can have impact on the timing of all closures -- rain is expected on Saturday, for example. Also as always, we ask for the public's patience as we push through some of these unpleasant but necessary steps. Once complete, US 281 will be a full freeway with six additional lanes between Loop 1604 and Borgfeld.

US 281 Expansion Project Update: Sonterra Ramp Long-Term Closure

In order to safely construct the southbound to westbound and southbound to eastbound direct connector ramps, the contractor on the project tells us it will be necessary to close the southbound Sonterra Boulevard entrance ramp to US 281 (see graphic below). 

The closure is scheduled to be put in place Monday (Jan. 14) morning and is anticipated to last until this late spring/early summer.

This closure allows for crews to work safely behind protective barrier while constructing retaining wall, drainage crossings and direct connector structures besides and over the Sonterra entrance ramp, as well as reconstructing and realigning the ramp. 

The new direct connector pillars will be placed where the current ramp aligns to connect to southbound US 281. The new ramp will slightly shift west to provide sufficient space for the new pillars.

Drivers wishing to access southbound US 281 will proceed through the intersections at Loop 1604 and Donella Drive, then take the Donella entrance ramp.

Following the ramp closure, a study will take place on the timing of the signals at the Loop 1604 and Donella Drive Intersections to ensure good traffic flow.

• Monday, January 7 until Friday, January 11. Daily 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Southbound left lane from Tilden to FM 1962 for excavation and barrier work.

FM 1516 – Far East San Antonio

• Monday, January 7 until Thursday, January 24. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Full closure in both directions between Kneupper Street and North Street as well as from Station Street to FM 3502 for storm drainage installation and paving work.
