Nitty-Gritty Time On US 281 Expansion Project: Major Changes Taking Place Next Week

Just as promised a couple of weeks ago when we implemented the traffic switch on the southbound side taking traffic off the mainlanes and onto the new frontage road, now we've got the same scenario but for the northbound side lined up to take effect Monday (Nov. 12) morning at 5 a.m. (see illustrations below).

So basically as you head north on US 281 past Loop 1604, you will be diverted off the mainlanes onto the new frontage road -- keeping the same number of lanes at three. This is only for the stretch between Sonterra Boulevard and Encino Rio. Please do note that since it's still a construction zone, the speed limit in the traffic switch stretch goes down from 60 mph to 45 mph.

Additionally, another important closure is scheduled for next week on this project. The southbound Sonterra Boulevard entrance ramp will be closed starting Tuesday night (Nov. 13) through at least early next year for ramp reconstruction, a new retaining wall, drainage and work on the westbound-southbound direct connector between US 281 and Loop 1604 (see illustration below).
