If you’re one of the approximately 50,000 drivers who travel I-10 in far east San Antonio each day, there is no doubt you’ve see some big changes between the I-410 interchange and Pfeil Road. Some recent examples include temporary and permanent changes to the exit and entrance ramps between Ackerman and Foster, the demolition of the old Graytown Road overpass, multiple temporary mainlane traffic switches, and shifts to a one-way traffic pattern on the east and westbound frontage roads.
This section of I-10 on San Antonio’s east side was constructed in the late 1950’s and early 60s’. A much-needed expansion and rebuild began in 2017, and there’s still quite a bit of work left to do. With summer just around the corner, crews for multiple projects in this area are gearing up to take advantage of better weather. This means you can expect more changes and construction activity along the corridor, including lane closures and traffic switches.
Contract crews “tie” steel rebar on the eastbound lanes of I-10 near Foster Road
in far east San Antonio. The reinforcing steel helps minimize pavement damage.
Preparation for these changes began earlier this spring and will continue to keep crews busy this week and well into the summer months. Here’s a snapshot of what’s coming up through early June:
- On Monday, May 18, the contractor for frontage road improvements will close the westbound exit to FM 1516. Drivers wanting to exit to FM 1516 will take the Loop 1604 exit or exit to Foster Road and use the newly constructed turnaround.
- Next Friday, May 22, workers will begin hanging beams on westbound I-10 at Martinez Creek. A westbound lane closure may be required for the work.
- Originally scheduled for this week, the contractor for our mainlane widening project between I-410 and Loop 1604 will now shift eastbound traffic to the outside mainlane/shoulder area from Ackerman Road to Woodlake Parkway later this month or in early June. This will clear the way for a westbound traffic switch to the inside median area shortly thereafter. Following the westbound traffic switch, the westbound entrance ramp from Ackerman Road will be closed for several months as crews reconstruct the outside westbound mainlanes.
- In late May/early June, our contractor for mainlane widening and frontage road improvements between Loop 1604 and Pfeil Road will shift east and westbound traffic to the outside shoulder area (which is currently being resurfaced) to allow workers to begin rebuilding the section in the middle of the interstate.
- In early June, crews will remove and begin reconstructing the north side of the I-10 bridges over Ackerman Road and Rosillo Creek. Temporary closures of the intersections under I-10 will be required during this work.
As a reminder, detailed closures and detours are posted on the Go Ahead! Blog each Friday.
