Northbound US 281 Mainlanes and Sonterra Blvd. Exit Ramp Opening This Weekend

Good news for motorists traveling on US 281. Two new northbound US 281 mainlanes, from Loop 1604 to south of Evans Road, are scheduled to open the evening of Saturday, June 27. With the new mainlanes, we will also open the northbound US 281 frontage road exit ramp to Sonterra Boulevard.

Motorists traveling on northbound US 281 headed to Redland Road or Encino Rio will now need to use the newly-opened exit ramp to Sonterra Boulevard, as the new northbound US 281 mainlanes will give drivers an express route past Encino Rio without additional exits.  South of Evans Road, after Encino Rio, the northbound US 281 mainlanes will then merge back with the frontage road as shown in the graphic below. If drivers miss the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp, they can also use the north- to southbound turnaround at Evans Road as an alternate detour to Encino Rio or back to Redland Road.

More openings are planned within the next two months. During July, the southbound US 281 flyover ramps to east- and westbound Loop 1604 are scheduled to open, followed by the opening of the signalized Redland Road intersection in August.

Construction activities are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
