NEW EASTBOUND FRONTAGE ROAD OPENING AT SH 46 AND I-10 IN KENDALL COUNTY



As part of the ongoing IH-10 frontage road construction the contractor is progressing into the next stage of construction which will require the opening of the new SH 46 bridge structure, the new Eastbound Frontage Road at the SH 46 (Bandera Rd) intersection, the new Backage Road intersection at SH 46, and the new Backage Road at Upper Balcones Road intersection.
 
This work that is scheduled to start on Wednesday October 20, 2021 at 2:00 am.

This will allow TxDOT’s contractor to shift traffic onto the portion of the new bridge and new pavement that has been built so that the old SH 46 bridge can be demolished and the remainder of the new 6 lane bridge and approach work can be completed. Estimated completion Spring 2022.
 
The existing Eastbound Exit 540 to SH 46/Bandera Road will remain open but will be limited to right turns only, traveling westbound SH 46 traffic only. Eastbound (Boerne) traffic will be directed to use the Scenic Loop detour.
 
DETOUR: Eastbound SH 46 traffic into Boerne will remain on the I-10 Eastbound mainlanes and detour to Exit 543 down the Eastbound Frontage Road to the Scenic Loop turnaround and directed back onto Westbound I-10 mainlanes to Exit 540 SH 46/Bandera Rd.
 
SH 46 Traffic
  • SH 46 traffic will be switched over on to the new bridge and pavement
  • SH 46 traffic will be able to turn onto both the new Eastbound frontage road towards San Antonio and the existing Westbound frontage road towards Kerrville
 
Upper Balcones Rd. and New Backage Road
  • Upper Balcones traffic will be able to access the new Eastbound Frontage Road towards San Antonio via the new Backage Road
  • The new Backage Road will be allow two-way traffic between SH 46 and the new Eastbound Frontage Road
  • The new Backage Road at SH 46 will be right turns only into Boerne, and will not allow left turns westward onto SH 46 towards Pipe Creek / SH 16.
