Remember the two traffic pattern changes (“switches”) that were put in place earlier this summer as part of the I-10 expansion project between I-410 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s Far East Side? Our contractor is now gearing up for the third in a series of eastbound switches called for in the project plans.
As you may recall, the point of these switches are to temporarily redirect traffic off an area of the highway in order for crews to get access to that area. In our case for this project, the switches divert eastbound mainlane drivers to new concrete pavement in the former center median.
The first two switches occurred on both the west and east ends of the work zone -- from I-410 to Rosillo Creek and from Woodlake Parkway to Loop 1604, respectively. The third switch planned for this weekend will complete the gap in the middle section of the project area from Rosillo Creek to Woodlake Parkway.
Luckily, this upcoming switch is fairly straight forward and it will allow crews to smooth out some curves in the roadway.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, October 11, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 14, please plan for the following chronological sequence of activities and closures:
- All I-10 eastbound mainlanes will be closed at the Foster Road exit as crews set barriers for the traffic switch. One eastbound mainlane will also be closed from the Ackerman Road entrance ramp (just west of Foster Road) to Woodlake Parkway. DETOUR: All mainlane traffic will exit to Foster Road and immediately take the next entrance ramp from Ackerman Road, reentering to a single eastbound mainlane of I-10.
- Once barriers are in place, one eastbound mainlane of traffic will reopen at the Foster Road exit and switch to the new concrete pavement in the center median area. All existing eastbound mainlanes will close from Rosillo Creek to Woodlake Parkway. The existing eastbound entrance ramp from Ackerman Road will also be closed at this time to allow crews to connect a temporary entrance ramp to the new concrete pavement. DETOUR: Drivers seeking to enter I-10 mainlanes from Ackerman Road will stay on the frontage road, travel through the Foster Road intersection and reenter the highway east of Foster Road.
- Two eastbound mainlanes and the temporary entrance ramp from Ackerman Road are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday (October 14).
Police officers will be on site during this switch to help guide traffic and ensure as smooth transition as possible. As a reminder, this mainlane expansion project will add capacity through additional travel lanes and various reconstructed bridges/overpasses.
