Exciting news, we are now ready to open both the east- and westbound Loop 1604 flyover ramps to northbound US 281 mainlanes. 

Opening overnight on Monday, May 10, the new flyover ramps will provide drivers with direct access to northbound US 281 mainlanes without needing to exit or use frontage roads.

OPENING OF STONE OAK PARKWAY INTERSECTION AT US 281

Now that the US 281 mainlanes north of Stone Oak Parkway have opened, we are thrilled to announce that the Stone Oak/Tournament Players Club (TPC) Parkway underpass intersection at US 281 will follow this weekend, the evening of Saturday, May 8. 

Opening the Stone Oak Parkway intersection under US 281 will allow drivers to cross from one side of Stone Oak Parkway to the other with both east- and westbound lanes of Stone Oak/Tournament Players Club (TPC) Parkway along with both the north- to southbound and south- to northbound turnarounds moving onto the frontage roads. The conversion of this intersection will include pedestrian access.

UPDATES: US 281 NORTH EXPANSION PROJECT

Extension of SB US 281 Mainlanes North of Evans Rd. 

We are happy to announce that the extension of the southbound US 281 mainlanes are now ready to open. 

The extension of US 281 mainlanes will be in both directions, north of Evans Road, past Stone Oak/Tournament Players Club (TPC) Parkway beginning the evening of Monday, April 5. 

Safety Reminder: US 281 North-to-Southbound Turnaround North of Marshall Rd.

We also remind you to keep safety as your first priority. Northbound US 281 traffic should use the recommended detour to safely head west on Stone Oak Parkway by turning around past Marshall Road south of Oakland Bend and turning right on Stone Oak Parkway.
 
This detour reduces confusion for northbound US 281 mainlane traffic merging onto the northbound US 281 frontage road while we finish construction of the Stone Oak/Tournament Players Club (TPC) Parkway underpass and intersection, scheduled to open soon.

UPDATE: Southbound US 281 Mainlanes Between Evans Road and Stone Oak Parkway

We are thrilled that the extension of the northbound US 281 mainlanes north of Evans Road was completed seamlessly last weekend. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the southbound US 281 mainlane extension north of Evans Road was not ready to open when we previously announced. The southbound US 281 mainlanes are expected to open in the coming weeks and we will provide updates as the schedule is determined. We appreciate your patience while we work hard to improve everyone’s commute. 

We also remind northbound US 281 traffic that the recommended detour to safely head west on Stone Oak Parkway is to continue north on US 281 past Marshall Road, turn around at Oakland Bend, and use the southbound US 281 frontage road. This detour reduces confusion for US 281 mainlane traffic merging onto the frontage road while we finish construction of the Stone Oak/TPC Parkway underpass and intersection, scheduled to open in a couple of months.

Traffic Switch of the Southbound US 281 Frontage Road South of Marshall Road to North of Stone Oak Parkway

We are excited to announce the traffic switch of the southbound US 281 frontage road south of Marshall Road to north of Stone Oak Parkway beginning the evening of Saturday, Feb. 6. 

This traffic switch marks the connection of the new frontage between Marshall Road and Stone Oak Parkway. Drivers will be traveling on new pavement, eliminating additional detours.

CONVERSION OF THE ENCINO RIO INTERSECTION AT US 281

 

         

As we continue to make progress in the area, we are glad to report the conversion of the Encino Rio intersection at US 281 to a conventional intersection with the inclusion of the southbound US 281 left turn lane to eastbound Encino Rio beginning Saturday, Jan. 23. 

This turn lane will allow southbound drivers to access Encino Rio heading east, while maintaining all existing US 281 turnarounds heading both north- and south, frontage road lanes, as well as the westbound left turn lane to southbound US 281 within the intersection.

Opening of the Evans Road Underpass Intersection at US 281

Now that the US 281 mainlanes north of Evans Road have opened, we are happy to announce that the Evans Road underpass intersection at US 281 will follow this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 10. Opening of US 281 Mainlanes North of Evans Road

 

During the weekend of Friday, Sept. 25, we will open new US 281 mainlanes north of Evans Road. Drivers will have new pavement and ramps as we continue to make progress in the area.

Later, following the new mainlanes, we will also open the Evans Road underpass intersection at US 281 allowing drivers to cross from one side of Evans Road to the other with both east- and westbound lanes of Evans Road along with both north- to southbound and south- to northbound turnarounds moving towards the frontage roads.

Traffic Switch of the Northbound to Southbound US 281 Turnaround South of Marshall Road

On the weekend of Sept. 18, we will close the existing north- to southbound US 281 turnaround south of Marshall Road. To ease congestion and increase functionality, a traffic switch will move motorists to the intersection of Marshall Road and US 281, where drivers will now take a left turn at Marshall Road, then another left turn onto the southbound US 281 frontage road.

Major Changes Coming to US 281 This Weekend

The project to improve US 281 north of Stone Oak Parkway continue to progress, with the contractor making some major changes for drivers this weekend including a traffic switch and full lane closure.  

Traffic Switch

A traffic switch is planned for this weekend, September 18-20, for commuters traveling on US 281 between Overlook Parkway and Marshall Road. Details on the new traffic pattern drivers will see can be found below. 

         Southbound Traffic

Southbound commuters will see another traffic pattern change that will be occurring north of Overlook Parkway to south of the Marshall Road intersection by using the newly created southbound frontage road. 

         Northbound Traffic

Northbound commuters will continue to use the existing mainlanes on US 281. Due to the new traffic pattern, the cross-over sections within this area will be closed. Barriers and barricades will be used to notify the traveling public.

 
It is crucial that the necessary steps are taken to help facilitate construction. With that in mind, TxDOT has posted detour routes message boards, construction signs, and reduced speed limit signs. This section will encompass a reduction from 65 mph to 55 mph, down to 45 mph. 

Full Lane Closures

The intersection at US 281 and Bulverde Road will be fully closed in order to complete work for the traffic switch. Bulverde Road will be fully closed and traffic will be detoured around through Borgfeld Road. 

As always, scheduled construction is subject to change due to weather and other variables.

US 281 Openings: Redland Rd. Bypass Ramp & Signalized Underpass Intersection

 

On the evening of Wednesday, August 26, we will open the Redland Road bypass ramp for through-traffic looking to fly over the Redland Road intersection below and as a northbound US 281 entrance ramp.

Drivers will use the left lane of the northbound US 281 frontage road to enter the bypass ramp, but will have the option of staying on the frontage road and traveling over the signalized Redland Road intersection beneath or heading north on the US 281 mainlanes.

At this time, the signalized Redland Road underpass intersection at US 281 will also open.  

The signal lights at the north- and southbound US 281 frontage roads will be turned on to allow for safe passage of traffic underneath the bridge. 

The signals will also allow drivers to turn left in each direction as well as open both turnarounds.

While we make these changes, we will also have several overnight closures for August 26 beginning at 9 p.m.:

The southbound US 281 frontage road from Encino Rio to Redland Road will be closed.

Traffic will detour by taking the south- to northbound turnaround at Encino Rio, taking the north- to southbound turnaround at Evans Road and using the Evans Road entrance ramp to return to US 281 mainlanes.  

The southbound US 281 frontage road exit ramp to Redland Road will be closed. 

Traffic will detour by taking the southbound US 281 Donella Drive exit ramp, use the south- to northbound turnaround at Donella Drive and take the Donella Drive entrance ramp.

The north- to southbound turnaround at Encino Rio, as well as the west- to southbound Encino Rio left turn lane will be closed.

The detour for both will be to take the northbound US 281 frontage road and use the north- to southbound turnaround at Stone Oak Parkway.

New Flyover Ramps at US-281 and Loop 1604 Set to Open

Get ready for a smoother commute as two new flyover ramps at the US 281 and Loop 1604 interchange are set to open to traffic. Scheduled for the weekend of August 15, the two new flyover ramps will offer drivers a seamless and direct connection from the southbound mainlanes of US 281 to the east- and westbound mainlanes of Loop 1604.

These new flyover ramps mark a major milestone on Segment 1 of the US-281N Expansion project, designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on the most congested corridor in the San Antonio area.

The addition of these flyover ramps will allow for seamless travel on six of the eight ramps planned for the US 281 and Loop 1604 interchange. The remaining two ramps are scheduled to open by the end of 2021.

A New Traffic Pattern Ahead for US-281 Drivers In North San Antonio

Beginning Saturday, August 8, drivers traveling south on US-281 in north San Antonio will see a major change in the traffic pattern from the Comal/Bexar County Line to Bulverde Road. 

The implementation of this new traffic pattern is critical to continue progress on the US-281 expansion project. 

What does this mean for you as the commuter?

As construction on US-281 moves closer to its completion date, a new traffic pattern has emerged. It might seem frustrating to you, the driver, but be assured your commute will not be impacted. 

Southbound Traffic

Southbound commuters will see a major traffic pattern change that will be occurring form the Comal/Bexar County Line to just north of the Bulverde Road intersection. Commuters will be able to enjoy using the newly created southbound frontage road. 

TxDOT has posted detour signs to inform the driver of the new traffic pattern in an effort to improve safety and increase mobility along the corridor. 

 

Northbound Traffic

Northbound Commuters will continue to use the existing mainlanes on US-281. Due to the new traffic pattern, the cross-over sections within this area will be closed. Barriers and barricades will be used to notify the traveling public that these cross-over sections will not be available. 

Safety Measures

Safety is TxDOT's top priority. There will be several measures taken to improve safety and communication with drivers along this section, including: 

• Detour route message boards;
• Constructions signs; and,
• Reduced speed limit signs. 

Additionally, this section will encompass a speed reduction from 65 mph to 55 mph down to 45 mph.

Emergency Closure of the Northbound US 281 Frontage Road

The northbound US 281 frontage road between the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road and Sonterra Boulevard will be closed nightly 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 14 until Thursday, July 16. 

To detour, take the southbound US 281 frontage road, use the south- to northbound turnaround at Donella Drive and take the northbound US 281 Donella Drive entrance ramp to continue on northbound US 281. 

This closure will allow us to perform emergency repairs on the northbound US 281 frontage road.
