  • Full closure of westbound entrance ramp just before Dominion Dr. and exit ramp to Boerne Stage Rd.
  • Full closure of westbound exit ramp to Old Fredericksburg Rd.

All traffic will be detoured to frontage roads and law enforcement will provide traffic control at intersections.

These closures will allow crews to install wiring for digital message boards as part of scheduled work on the I-10 Expansion project. The project transforms the I-10 northwest corridor from four mainlanes to eight mainlanes by adding one general purpose lane and one HOV lane in each direction.

The I-10 Expansion project has a total estimated cost of $70 million. Construction began on the I-10 expansion project in 2017 and reached substantial completion in Fall 2020. Flatiron Construction is the contractor on the project.

Switching Things Up: Next Milestone On Loop 337 Project in New Braunfels

Following rush hour tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 21) morning, the newly constructed southbound Loop 337 lanes between New Braunfels High School (north of the SH 46 overpass) and just south of Oak Run Parkway will open to drivers as the latest in a series of scheduled traffic switches on the Loop 337 Expansion Project.

All southbound traffic will be permanently shifted to the new lanes. Once this section has opened, crews will begin work on existing lanes, with one northbound lane remaining open to traffic.

Following the traffic switch, drivers turning from Oak Run Parkway will only be able to head southbound on Loop 337. Drivers wishing to head north on Loop 337 will need to take southbound Loop 337 and turn around at Stone Crossing.

This section of southbound Loop 337 is the last to open as part of this project. Crews will continue working on sections of northbound Loop 337 and making additional improvements in future phases of this project.

Message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to help guide drivers safely along the roadway.

We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain alert when traveling through the work zone. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the Loop 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is estimated to be completed in late 2021. The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive, and includes an upgrade to a 4-lane divided roadway with pedestrian accommodations and new bridges in various locations.

Loop 337 Expansion: Traffic Switch & New Exit Ramp

We're making great progress on the largest-scale construction project we currently have going in Comal County!

Talking about the Loop 337 expansion, which will widen it from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway.

Tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, May 21), southbound traffic will be shifted to newly constructed southbound lanes between Hanz Drive and Rock Street, weather permitting. Crews will also re-open the newly-constructed exit ramp at Gruene Road.

To safely implement the traffic shift, drivers entering Loop 337 from River Terrace and Hanz Drive will be allowed to make right turns only. This is a permanent intersection change at River Terrace. At the end of this phase of construction, Hanz Drive will open as a traditional signalized intersection, allowing left turns.

Message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to help guide drivers safely travel along the roadway.

We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain aware when driving through the work zone. As always, weather may impact the timing of these closures. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the Loop 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021.

The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive. It includes an upgrade to a 4-lane divided roadway with pedestrian accommodations and new bridges in various locations.

This is the latest milestone on this project. Previously, we put in a place a mile-long southbound traffic switch, diverting traffic to the new lanes between River Road and SH 46.

Heads-Up: I-35 & FM 1103 Closed This Weekend

We've got a major closure this weekend on I-35 in Comal County with an extended detour for local residents but no impact to mainlane traffic.

Our contractor on this project, Anderson Columbia, will be closing the I-35 overpass/bridge at FM 1103 and the northbound frontage road between FM 2252 and FM 1103 beginning at 7 a.m., Saturday, May 18 until 5 a.m., Monday May 20.

As part of this closure, the I-35 northbound exit ramp (Exit 178) to FM 1103 will not be accessible to traffic. The intersection of I-35 northbound frontage road and FM 1103 will also be closed -- drivers planning to exit the highway at FM 1103 will be diverted to exit at FM 3009 for a designated detour route (see map).

Please note: I-35 mainlanes in both directions as well as the southbound frontage road will NOT be affected and will remain open at all times.

This detour route from I-35/FM 3009 to FM 78/ FM 1103 is 9.5 miles long and it’s primarily directed for local residents trying to get on I-35 northbound.

The northbound frontage road entrance ramp at FM 2252 will be open to drivers so they can access the mainlanes prior to the closed intersection.

The need and purpose for this closure is for milling and placing hot mix asphalt to build up the intersection of FM 1103 and the I-35 northbound frontage road.

Electronic message boards will be placed on site in advance alerting drivers to be prepared for the closure. We will also have law enforcement officers on site to help direct traffic flow.

Despite all these preparatory and cautionary measures, we encourage drivers to seek alternative routes and otherwise expect delays in the area of the closed intersection.

Major Closure at Loop 1604 & Pat Booker This Weekend

If you frequently use FM 218 (Pat Booker Road) in Northeast San Antonio, we'd like to encourage you to avoid the area and seek alternative routes this weekend.

As part of a project expanding Loop 1604 mainlanes from a partial to full highway between FM 78 and I-35, this weekend we will begin demolition (using heavy machinery) of the Pat Booker Road overpass/bridge. That  means that Pat Booker will be closed all weekend at Loop 1604, from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday (see below for maps showing the closure limits, hours and detours).

Additionally, our contractor will need to close Loop 1604 mainlanes in both directions at the intersection on a nightly basis throughout the weekend (closing Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and opening back up the next morning. So the mainlanes will remain open in both directions during each day.

The turnarounds on Loop 1604 at Pat Booker will also need to be closed -- the northbound-to-southbound closed Friday 9 a.m. through Wednesday noon while the southbound-to-northbound will be closed Friday 9 a.m. through Monday 5 a.m. and again Wednesday through Friday noon to 3 p.m.

Depending on how much progress is made on the bridge demolition over the weekend, there may still be remaining work to be done -- in that case, additional closures of Pat Booker Road and turnarounds  will take place nightly Monday through Friday 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

This 3-mile-long project on Loop 1604 has a price tag of approximately $46 million. It started this January and is estimated to be completed late spring of 2021. The area covered by the project currently sees an average of 70,000 cars, projected to grow to nearly 90,000 by 2040.

Beyond the mainlane widening work, this project will rehab frontage roads and change their configuration to provide continuous coverage, reconfigure ramps and add auxiliary lanes between ramps as well as the reconstruction of the Pat Booker overpass/bridge, which dates back to the early 1970s. The first phase of that work starts this weekend while the second is scheduled for late 2020.

Partner entities in the closure area including various municipalities, JBSA-Randolph, IKEA and The Forum shopping center have been notified of this major closure. We also have electronic signs alerting drivers, who should expect backups on Pat Booker Road as well as the Loop 1604 frontage roads. If possible, again, we're encouraging them to avoid the area and look into alternative routes.

Long-Term Closure On Hausman Road Widening Project

We're keenly aware of the high level of patience and understanding we ask of drivers along FM 1560 (Hausman Road) and other surrounding construction zones in the Helotes area,  such as SH 16 (Bandera Road) and Loop 1604.

We want to highlight one particular area of concern that local residents will be facing -- the right- turn lane closure from Hausman to Bandera Road (SH 16), pictured below. We want you to know your feedback is very important to us as we asses how to best mitigate the length of this closure and traffic congestion.

The utility additions and adjustments under this portion of the roadway unfortunately make it are necessary for the improvement of our highway infrastructure. In an effort to make this closure as painless as possible for the traveling public, our project managers along with the contractor are re-evaluating the proposed methods of construction for these essential improvements. Unfortunately, this area has limited access points preventing us from establishing detours.

We have already identified potential elements that can be redesigned to accelerate construction. We plan to bore the proposed gas line crossing Hausman at this intersection instead of installing by open trench methods which would mean tearing through the roadway.

We have taken numerous measures to notify the public of this closure, such as installing portable electronic signs already in place for two weeks. We are also placing extra message boards along entrances from Loop 1604. We have posted about it online here through our blog, as well as through our social media channels. Additionally, we have teamed up with partner agencies such as the City of Helotes and we have also conducted interviews with the media as another way of getting the word out.

This closure is scheduled to start Monday, February 25 and it's projected to last approximately a month. Why that long? The contractor will install a 125-foot gas main crossing under Hausman required just inside of the existing pavement edge. There is also 150 feet of sanitary sewer installed directly under the right-turn lane requiring the construction of four supplemental manholes. Lastly, there's the construction of the drainage structure extending across Hausman.

Bottom line, our options are limited but we're doing our best to try to work through as quickly as possible and we'll continue to explore potential alternatives that could lessen the inconvenience that drivers surely will feel being stuck in traffic. Thank you as always for your steadfast patience and understanding! There is light at the end of the tunnel -- once it's finished, this project will double the number of current lanes, establish raised medians and bring new sidewalks and bike lanes.

Major Traffic Shift On US 281 Expansion Project

We've reached a key milestone as we make progress on the US 281 Expansion Project.

Starting this weekend, we're going to start a series of traffic switches or diversions, sending drivers to newly built frontage roads on sections of the highway where we'll be working on the mainlanes (this switch will stay in place for months until the new mainlanes are ready to go).

The first of these switches will take place this weekend, with southbound drivers being diverted off the mainlanes onto the new frontage road between Encino Rio and Sonterra Boulevard (the northbound side is next and that'll take place in about two weeks). Please note that there will not be any loss of lanes -- the new frontage roads will have three lanes, same as drivers have had with mainlanes.

Also be aware that speed limit in this shift section will be reduced from the regular 60 mph down to 45 mph for safety reasons.

In order to enact this switch in an orderly manner, we'll need to put in place the following closures starting tonight (Thursday, October 11) at 9 p.m. through tomorrow (Friday, October 12) at 5 a.m. (weather permitting):
  • Alternating mainlanes of US 281 southbound between Encino Rio and the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp.
  • All mainlanes of US 281 southbound between the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp and the Sonterra Boulevard entrance ramp.

Always A Good Time To Visit Gruene, Right? Not If You're Stuck In Traffic

We're constructing southbound lanes on Loop 337 near Gruene Road and reconstructing the exit and ramp as part of the Loop 337 Expansion Project.

To perform this work safely and efficiently, crews will temporarily close the Gruene Road exit and ramp beginning Wednesday, October 10, for approximately two months (weather permitting).

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. We ask drivers to adhere to construction signage and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

Travelers on southbound Loop 337 will need to use Hanz Drive or River Street for access to Gruene Road. and Rock Street. The northbound exit for Rock Street will remain open during this work. Both Rock Street and Gruene Road will also remain open during this work.

Construction for the Loop 337 Expansion Project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021. The project is from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive and includes upgrading to a four-lane divided roadway with pedestrian accommodations and bridges in various locations.
