Your chance to speak up: Wurzbach at NW Military, Lockhill-Selma

When the Wurzbach Parkway extension finished and the eastern and western halves were connected in 2015 residents near the west end of the extension expressed concerns of traffic volumes through the intersections of Northwest Military, Lockhill-Selma and beyond.
Then-Councilman Ron Nirenberg worked quickly to partner with TxDOT to study options to enhance traffic flow from Northwest Military and I-10.
Some of those options have been determined and we want to talk about them with you. That means this is your chance to let us know what you think. That chance is tonight between 6 and 8 at the Barshop Jewish Community Center Auditorium. Here are the details:
Who: Anyone and everyone with an interest in how the intersections of Wurzbach Parkway and Northwest Military or Lockhill-Selma turn out
What: Open house with design engineers and project planners
When: Wednesday, August 30 between 6 and 8 p.m.
Where: Barshop Jewish Community Center Auditorium, 12500 NW Military Drive, San Antonio, TX 78231
Why: Because you really really want to let us know what you think of our plans

Remember the big discussion will be about what we're going to end up doing at these major intersections (including options for an overpass), so you won't want to miss this discussion. Be sure you come out and see us!

Another expansion on Lp 1604 to be discussed

It's not on the northside, nor on the far west side. That doesn't mean we're not paying attention, though.
There's this seven-mile stretch between US 281 and Elmendorf that's currently a two-lane country highway we need to expand to improve safety and prepare for increased capacity.
We need your insights to make this happen effectively. We'll be hosting an open house tonight between 5:30 and 7:30 at the Southside High School cafeteria. You'll need to be there to check out our design and the features involved with this expansion. You'll also get to visit with the engineers designing the project. They'll have notepads ready for your comments regarding their plans.
Here's a snapshot of what we've got on deck:
  • Expanding Lp 1604 to a four-lane divided highway
  • Add pedestrian accommodations at various select locations
  • No additional right-of-way acquired for this work
This is your chance to influence the design of this project - if you're one of those who live, work or play in this area, be sure to come out and see us!

Wurzbach Parkway: The next chapter

Yes, the saga of Wurzbach Parkway continues.

Brief history
A collector and arterial route serving north-central San Antonio and crossing US 281 was drawn up in the early 1980s. This route was built piece-by-piece as money became available, with the final three segments starting construction back in 2011. The final segment, connecting West Avenue to Jones-Maltsberger, opened up September 2014.
With the final segment open and Wurzbach Parkway in full use, we kind of thought we'd be done talking about it here on the Go Ahead! blog. We were wrong. We've had more than a half-dozen posts on the Parkway since it opened, though admittedly many were about requests from stakeholders to raise the speed limits.
Now the speed limits are up, folks have been clamoring for help getting traffic through the Northwest Military and Lockhill-Selma intersections. Well, in true Wurzbach Parkway fashion, we're fixing this in pieces.

Public input
If you get frustrated being stuck at that signal at Northwest Military Highway during peak traffic hours, we need to hear from you.
Not so fast! Don't go emailing us just yet. Instead, we want to chat with you in person. Tonight.
We'll be at Oak Meadow Elementary School between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to discuss the plan we've got worked out to get traffic through the Northwest Military intersection and improve traffic flow up to Lockhill Selma.
The idea is pretty cool, and looks a lot like the intersection of Fredericksburg Road at Medical Drive. It also involves a fancy intersection called a SPUI, or single-point urban interchange. (You can read about these things here, then come ready to chat with us about them at the open house. An animation on how a SPUI works is found here.)

If you can't make it
We'll have the materials posted on our web site here later this week. It'll include the powerpoint we show at the meeting as well as any relevant schematics and a video animation of the intersection. You'll also find appropriate contact info there to let us know what you think.
Whether you're at the meeting or not, if you don't speak up we won't know what you're thinking and considerations you are thinking of may get missed! We are, after all, only human!

Public meeting upcoming: Bandera Rd at Lp 1604

One of the trickier things we get to do is find a solution to intersections that are simply overloaded with traffic. One of those intersections is Bandera Road at Loop 1604.

Well, we've got a plan for this intersection. Honestly, the plan is a bit tough to describe here on a blog (it's called a displaced left turn) so we hope you'll come out to see what we're hoping to do during an open house presentation Thursday night. Here are the details:

  • Thursday, Oct. 27, between 6 and 8 p.m. (come as you're able; we won't have a formal presentation but will have tables set up with engineers available for questions).
  • O'Connor High School cafeteria ... that's at 12221 Leslie Road in Helotes.
  • Discussion of proposed plans to address congestion issues on Bandera Road at Lp 1604; please let us know what you think. Your input can impact what will actually happen there.
In the meantime, take a look at this video showing a similar intersection improvement on I-35 in San Marcos ... then come to the meeting ready to ask questions!

Public meeting notice: I-10 Managed Lanes

If you've not heard, there's a lot of growth along the I-10 corridor outside Loop 1604 through the Leon Springs and Fair Oaks Ranch area. In order to meet some of that growth, we've developed a plan (with the city and the county) that would bring two new lanes of highway in each direction between Ralph Fair Road and La Cantera Parkway.

These new lanes would be managed lanes

If you're interested in seeing the proposed concept design and providing direct feedback on this project, we're hosting a public meeting Tuesday, May 19 from 5 until 7 p.m. This will be held at the Leon Springs Baptist Church at 24133 Boerne Stage Road. The meeting will be an open-house format, with no formal presentation. Attendees may come and go as they please.

Again, here are the particulars of the meeting:
When - Tuesday, May 19. 5-7 p.m.
Where - Leon Springs Baptist Church, 24133 Boerne Stage Road
What - Open house regarding proposed managed lanes along I-10 between La Cantera Pkwy and Ralph Fair Road
Why - So you can provide input and get questions answered directly from those who plan and design these projects
