KENDALL COUNTY: WB I-10 ENTRANCE RAMP FROM SH 46 CLOSED UNTIL MAY 2022

As part of the ongoing IH-10 frontage road construction the contractor is progressing into the next stage of construction which will require the closure of the existing westbound I-10 entrance ramp from SH-46 (Bandera Rd.).

Construction of the new westbound I-10 entrance ramp will require the temporary closure of the existing westbound SH 46/Bandera Rd. entrance ramp onto I-10 to construct the new westbound SH-46 Entrance ramp and new Westbound Frontage Road that will tie into the new SH-46 pavement, bridge, and frontage road. School Street traffic will be diverted to SH 46. There will not be any additional changes to the intersection traffic configuration at this time.

Work is scheduled to start on Monday April 4, 2022 at 9:00 AM, weather permitting. Construction of the new ramp and westbound frontage road is estimated to take three (3) weeks, weather permitting.

DETOUR:  SH-46/Bandera Rd traffic will be detoured down the Eastbound Frontage Road to the Eastbound SH-46 Entrance ramp onto I-10 and will utilize the next Exit 543 Scenic Loop to be detoured down the eastbound frontage road to the Scenic Loop turnaround. Once under I-10 traffic will be directed back onto the westbound I-10 mainlanes using the existing westbound entrance ramp.

Changes Coming to I-10 Frontage Road near US 87 in Kendall County

Crews are progressing into the next stage of construction on the I-10 frontage road in Kendall County. As part of this construction stage, the eastbound frontage road will be permanently changed from a two-way traffic operation to a one-way traffic operation between US-87 (Main Street) and Scenic Loop. This will allow crews to continue working on the new eastbound frontage road and new ramps in this area.

This work is scheduled to start Saturday April 10, 2021, weather permitting.

As part of this transformation, the new US-87 turnaround bridge will be opened to allow westbound frontage road traffic to directly access the new eastbound frontage road and provide access to local businesses and residences under the one-way traffic operations.  The newly constructed US-87 bridge will be opened to allow southbound US-87 (Main Street) traffic coming out of Boerne to cross over IH-10 directly onto the new eastbound frontage Road.

Unfortunately, at this time, the use of the above new bridges will no longer allow direct access from the existing eastbound frontage road to US-87.  Traffic will need to continue eastward on the frontage road to Scenic Loop and double back on the westbound frontage road to access US-87.  This condition will be rectified to in later phases of the project to allow direct access between the eastbound frontage road and US-87.

Ready For This? Series Of Overnight Closures Next Week On I-10 In Far East San Antonio

Engineering fans, geek out on this.

Our ongoing work on the I-10 mainlane expansion project in Far East San Antonio will require a complex series of overnight closures of Ackerman Road, I-10 westbound mainlanes and ramps connecting I-410 and I-10.

The process entails closures and detours revealing a method to the madness that we attempt to unpack for you here.

For starters, if you drive this are often you already know that the eastbound I-10 exit ramp to Ackerman Road remains closed to traffic while crews work on the outside eastbound mainlanes. We bring that up not just as a reminder but also for context, since this ongoing closure further complicates these additional steps that need be taken now.

There is good news out of all of this, believe it or not -- next week’s closures are temporary and will only impact overnight traffic, plus let’s not forget that an additional (third) westbound I-10 mainlane will be opened to traffic following this work.

For those whose night travels will take them through the area during the closure period, we’ve prepared a navigation guide to help you reach your destination as quickly and painlessly as possible:

Closures of I-410 Ramps to Eastbound I-10 – Overnight Sunday, Sept. 8
Crews will be closing both the northbound and southbound I-410 ramps connecting to eastbound I-10 from 7 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 8) through 5 a.m. Monday (Sept. 9) morning to make needed asphalt repairs. Only one ramp will be closed at a time.

NORTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: Northbound I-410 drivers accessing eastbound I-10 will take the cloverleaf exit ramp to westbound I-10, stay in the right lane and take the next cloverleaf ramp to southbound I-410, then take a third and final cloverleaf ramp from southbound I-410 to eastbound I-10 (see map below).

SOUTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: Southbound I-410 traffic needing to access eastbound I-10 will stay on I-410, exit at FM 1346/E. Houston St., turn around, enter the northbound I-410 mainlanes and take the connecting ramp to eastbound I-10 (see map below).

Closures of Ackerman Road at I-10 – Overnight Monday, Sept. 9 & Tuesday, Sept. 10

Crews will be placing beams for the I-10 bridge over Ackerman Road on Monday and Tuesday nights, which will require the closure of Ackerman Road in both directions under I-10 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night.

DETOUR: Northbound Ackerman Road traffic will take the I-10 eastbound frontage road to Foster Road, turn around and take the I-10 westbound frontage road back to Ackerman Road. Southbound Ackerman Road traffic will take the I-10 westbound entrance ramp just west of Ackerman, stay in the right lane, take the I-410 South connecting ramp, travel southbound on I-410, exit to FM 1346/E. Houston St., turn around and take the northbound frontage road back to Ackerman Road (map below).

Closures of I-10 Westbound Mainlanes & I-410 to Westbound I-10 Ramps – Overnight Wednesday, Sept. 11

Crews will be restriping the westbound I-10 mainlanes at I-410 on Wednesday night to allow for the opening of an additional (third) lane to traffic traveling westbound from I-410. This will require a two-phased closure that will be in place from 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 until 5 a.m. Thursday, September 12.

Phase 1: Beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, all I-10 westbound mainlanes will be closed between the exit ramp to I-410 and the I-10 westbound entrance ramp located just west of the I-410 interchange as crews restripe the left lane.

DETOUR: All westbound I-10 traffic will be directed to the I-410 exit ramp, stay left on the parallel collector-distributor road that travels under I-410 and re-enter I-10 westbound just west of I-410 (map below).

Phase 2: Once the left (inside) westbound mainlane of I-10 has been restriped, that single lane will be reopened to traffic and the westbound parallel collector-distributor road that travels under I-410 will be closed at the I-410 interchange. The ramps connecting I-410 to westbound I-10 will also be closed (map below).

WESTBOUND I-10 DETOUR: All I-10 westbound through-traffic will be directed to the left (inside) mainlane.

SOUTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: All southbound I-410 traffic needing to access westbound I-10 will stay on I-410, exit at FM 1346/E. Houston St., turn around, enter the northbound I-410 mainlanes, take the connecting ramp to eastbound I-10, exit to Foster Road, turn around and enter the I-10 westbound mainlanes just west of Foster.

NORTHBOUND I-410 RAMP DETOUR: All northbound I-410 traffic needing to access westbound I-10 should take the connecting ramp to eastbound I-10, exit to Foster Road, turn around and enter the I-10 westbound mainlanes just west of Foster.

What’s With All The I-10 Work On The Far East Side?

For drivers who regularly travel along I-10 in Far East San Antonio and Bexar County toward Seguin, you may have noticed a lot more construction activity going on the last couple of months –  a lot more. This is because there are not one, but two distinct yet overlapping projects – both of which include multiple improvements – currently underway between I-410 and Graytown Road.

This is just the beginning. Two additional construction projects in this area are scheduled to start later this year, all designed to bring you some much-needed safety and mobility improvements on the heavily-traveled I-10 East corridor connecting the San Antonio and Houston metro regions.

So, what exactly is being done in the corridor? Let’s break it down for you:

Frontage roads are being converted from two-way to one-way operation. These improvements have been underway since 2017 and are anticipated to be complete by 2020. Moving to one-way operation will improve safety on the frontage roads and exit/entrance ramps, minimizing conflicts between vehicles entering and exiting the mainlanes and helping bring the roadway up to current design standards.

A new overpass is being constructed at Woodlake Parkway. This work started in 2016 and should be complete a little later this year. The new overpass will improve access to eastbound I-10 for the lengthy stretch between Foster Road and FM 1516.

• Various intersection enhancements are being made at Foster Road, FM 1516 and Loop 1604 to improve traffic flow. These improvements are planned to be completed in early 2020.

Two additional mainlanes (one in each direction) are being added from I-410 to Loop 1604, which will widen the roadway from four to six lanes. In addition, the existing mainlanes are being reconstructed to bring the highway up to current design standards and address deteriorating pavement conditions. Together, these improvements will increase mobility and safety on the mainlanes. They have been in progress since Fall 2018 and are anticipated to be completed in 2022.

Later this year, work is scheduled to begin on a similar I-10 East mainlane widening and reconstruction project from Loop 1604 to Graytown Road, which will also include ramp improvements.

A project to widen Loop 1604 from two to four lanes from I-10 East south to Martinez Creek is also planned to begin later this year, which will require some work in the current I-10 East construction area.

Whew, that’s a lot of work in one area at the same time, we get it!

I-10 East mainlanes are being widened and reconstructed between I-410
and Loop 1604. Initial work is focused on preparing the median area to
accommodate future planned traffic shifts.
While we are thankful to have the resources to help address the ever-growing transportation needs in this area, we understand that so much construction can be inconvenient and downright frustrating at times for drivers.

All these activities have and will at some point require lane, ramp, and intersection closures, which can involve detours and/or cause backups. Luckily, most of the major work is planned to take place overnight and on weekends to reduce weekday traffic disruptions as much as possible.

To minimize any potential impacts of construction on your daily activities, we post all upcoming scheduled closures on this blog site every Friday afternoon to help you plan your trips the following week. We also post real-time construction and closure information –  including any major incidents –  on digital message signs along the corridor, as well as on the San Antonio District Twitter feed. In addition, we have updated our I-10 East Corridor project website to help you keep up with all the current and upcoming construction activities in the area.

Thanks for your ongoing patience as we work to make I-10 a safer, less congested roadway for residents, businesses, commuters and other travelers in this area.
