Loop 337 In New Braunfels: New Southbound Lanes Set To Open

More great news on the way for New Braunfels drivers facing unprecedented traffic due to the city's continued population growth.

After rush hour tomorrow morning, (Wednesday, September 4) the newly-constructed Loop 337 southbound lanes between Oak Run Parkway and San Antonio Street will open to traffic.

All southbound traffic will be permanently shifted to the new lanes, what we typically call a "traffic switch."  Once this section has opened, crews will begin work on the existing lanes, with one northbound lane remaining open to traffic.

A newly-constructed southbound access ramp for Landa Street on southbound Loop 337 will also be opened. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 from Landa Street, or wishing to access Landa Street, from southbound Loop 337 will need to use the new access road (see illustrations). Access to northbound SL 337 from Landa Street will not change.

Following the traffic shift, drivers turning from Ridge Hill Drive will only be able to head north on Loop 337. Drivers wishing to head south on Loop 337 will need to take northbound Loop 337 and turn around at the SH 46 interchange. Southbound traffic on Loop 337 looking to turn onto Ridge Hill Drive will temporarily need to use the new southbound exit to Landa Street, then use the north access ramp to northbound Loop 337.

Electronic message signs are in place to inform drivers of this change and additional signage will be placed to further guide drivers We ask the traveling public to follow construction signage and remain aware to move over if possible or at least slow down when approaching work crews. As always, weather may impact the timing of these openings. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Construction for the SL 337 Expansion project began in November 2017 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2021. The construction project is about six miles long, from I-35 to Hillcrest Drive, and includes an upgrade from a 2-lane roadway to a 4-lane divided roadway with new sidewalks and new bridges in various locations.

Back in April, crews opened the southbound lanes on SL 337 from River Road to SH 46. In May, a similar switch occurred between Hanz Drive and Rock Street. The new exit ramp at Gruene Road was also opened. Work on the northbound lanes will continue during this next phase of construction.
