Highway 16 between Spur 98 and Highway 173 (Kerrville)

Alternating lanes will close nightly – hours of 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. – while crews resurface the roadway. Off-duty police officers will help traffic get through the closure areas. Expect delays.

 

All planned lane closures are pending weather.

Wurzbach Parkway

Looking at the southbound frontage road of U.S. 281 coming from Nakoma Drive this morning, it seems not enough folks are getting the memo about the detour route for the closed entrance ramp. With that in mind, here are a few items of note:

No access to U.S. 281 exists south of Rhapsody Drive. Those who move south and try to pick up the next available ramp will find themselves on San Pedro and, eventually, I-410. This is the long way to get around the closure.

The posted detour route - there are signs! - takes traffic north to Bitter Rd. Yes, it's counterintuitive to go north when you want to head south, but the turnaround at Bitters and the entrance ramp immediately after will help get you where you want to go rather quickly.

Alright. On to other areas.

The Salado Creek Greenway connector at Mud Creek has been in moderate use and, after some minor work this week, should be in full use. This means hikers and bikers won't need to use the signalized crosswalk near Buckhorn Drive. The lights will be taken down by the city if San Antonio in the near future. We are waiting to have them removed to be sure our work at Mud Creek is complete, just in case we need to close the trail under the bridges at Mud Creek again.

So that's the most immediately impactful area of work between Jones-Maltsberger and Wetmore right now. Texas Sterling construction is also working to finish shaping the cul-de-sac on Old Bitters Road while working on the main lanes of the Parkway between Starcrest and J-M. This includes preparing the access point for the city's brush dump.

Painters are scheduled to begin work next week, making the Starcrest overpass and other bridges look nice.

Near McAllister Park, crews are waiting on resolution of a conflict with some SAWS structures to be able to switch traffic onto the permanent roadway lanes. Once the SAWS work is out of the way and traffic is moved - meaning the full intersection at Starcrest will be opened up and both Mud Creek bridges will be used - concrete crews will move in to finish the center barrier. That barrier work includes area near the brush dump, effectively opening up the full parkway.

Work is on pace to be finished and have the east end if the Parkway complete this fall.

Loop 1604 expansion

Progress on the overpass structure at Braun Road has reached a point where te first major intersection closures will begin to impact traffic. The good news is we are easing into things....

Beginning Monday, Williams Brothers Construction will begin daily closures of the north-to-south turnaround at Braun Road while crews drill foundations for bridge support shafts. This turnaround will only close from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, and will only impact traffic for about a week. We will see similar closures while the shafts are formed, as well as the formation of the column caps, later this month and into the fall. Williams Brothers will use the same closure schedule on the south-to-north turnaround in upcoming weeks.

For the remainder of what's going on:

I-10 Huebner project activities

This week's coordination meeting between Webber Construction and TxDOT staff focused on little things needing tweaked along the project while. Refs continue to push forward with the overpass at DeZavala Road.

Those items include:

- A few inches of asphalt milling near UTSA Blvd.

- Weekly barricade inspections

- A few overhead light posts that need to be turned on

- Stockpiles that need to be hauled off

- Lane markings that need to be clearer, particularly near exit and entrance ramps

- Overhead highway sign structures that still need to be built

- TransGuide cameras we need to get back on

- Silt fences that need to be adjusted after the last round of storms

On a larger scale, concrete crews are still working on retaining walls project-wide, particularly around DeZavala Road and at UTSA Blvd. Bridge crews are working six days a week on the DeZavala overpass bridge - they're building bridge abutments (concrete shelves that hold the bridge support beams) and a few column caps.

For those driving through the project, expect the routine closures that have been going on overnight or, on the frontage roads, during mid-day hours. We won't have major closures until later this month. This biggies that are upcoming:

- Full weekend closure of DeZavala Road at I-10 while crews hang bridge beams. This is targeted for the end of the month, and Webber's leaders are optimistic they could do this before the school year gets going.

- Full closure of eastbound I-10 main lanes at UTSA Blvd while crews hang bridge beams for the new east-to-west turnaround bridge. This will be a single night, likely a weeknight. Webber folks are eyeing mid-August for this.

- Full closure if westbound I-10 main lanes at UTSA Blvd. same story as the eastbound side.

When exact dates are set in concrete, we'll let you know!

Parkway Progress....

A minor traffic switch on Starcrest at Wurzbach Parkway and an upcoming milestone along southbound U.S. 281 highlight the latest developments on the parkway this week.

West Ave to Jones-Maltsberger

Saturday morning at 6 a.m. crews with Williams Brothers Construction will close the southbound entrance ramp from Nakoma Drive. The ramp will remain closed through the month of August; project bosses plan to have the ramp reopened in time for the North East ISD school year start if all goes well.

Two things to take not here - the one-day lane closures associated with the milestone and the detour route folks will use through August. First, the closures:

- two right lanes of southbound U.S. 281 main lanes will close Saturday only, 6 a.m. until 5 p.m., between Nakoma Drive and Rhapsody Drive, while crews place barrier. 

- one left lane of the southbound frontage road at Nakoma Drive will close Saturday only, 6 a.m. until 5 p.m., while crews place barrier. 

Again, the entrance ramp will be closed the entire month of August. If all goes well we'll have it reopened for the school year.

The detour route is going to sound counter-intuitive - kind of like when Lightning McQueen thought odd Hudson Hornet said the key to dirt-track racing is to turn right to go left in the Pixar movie Cars: to go south on U.S. 281 from Nakoma, you'll first need to go north. The posted detour will direct traffic north to Bitters Road, where folks will use the turnaround and enter the highway. Expect minor delays for this, and if this is a normal part of your routine you may wish to add five minutes to your travel time.

So much for the major traffic impacts. As for the stuff you can't see along the road, Williams Brothers is laying asphalt on what will be the westbound frontage road between U.S. 281 and West Avenue, marking the final area in the western segment of the parkway to be paved. Crews are constructing curbs, sidewalks and concrete barrier on this short stretch as well. Bridge crews are completing the overpass at Jones-Maltsberger, including the concrete paving sections east of J-M.

With more beams being produced for the structures near U.S. 281, we are hoping to have everything set by September - if weather and equipment cooperate. Once beams are in place, bridge builders will set bridge deck panels and form and pour the bridge deck over the highway.

We are still on pace to finish up mid-2015.

Jones-Maltsberger to Wetmore

Texas Sterling Construction is working hard to finish up the Mud Creek area and the future westbound lanes of the parkway between Wetmore and Mud Creek - a segment that could wrap up within a few weeks if weather and resources align right.

The biggest two developments are the opening of the Salado Creek Greenway connector at Mud Creek a few weeks ago and this week's traffic shift in Starcrest at Wurzbach Parkway. The traffic shift puts Starcrest in its final, completed configuration. Small work tasks remain, but the work on Starcrest is as good as completed.

Road builders and bridge crews are finishing the road between Starcrest and Old Bitters Road (or the city's brush dump), and concrete crews are finishing up a shared-use path along the parkway as well. That path, when complete, will effectively connect the Salado Creek Greenway to the Panther Creek area and Hardberger Park on Blanco Road.

Completion of the east segment is on pace for late fall of this year.
