Major Closure at Loop 1604 & Pat Booker This Weekend

If you frequently use FM 218 (Pat Booker Road) in Northeast San Antonio, we'd like to encourage you to avoid the area and seek alternative routes this weekend.

As part of a project expanding Loop 1604 mainlanes from a partial to full highway between FM 78 and I-35, this weekend we will begin demolition (using heavy machinery) of the Pat Booker Road overpass/bridge. That  means that Pat Booker will be closed all weekend at Loop 1604, from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday (see below for maps showing the closure limits, hours and detours).

Additionally, our contractor will need to close Loop 1604 mainlanes in both directions at the intersection on a nightly basis throughout the weekend (closing Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and opening back up the next morning. So the mainlanes will remain open in both directions during each day. 

The turnarounds on Loop 1604 at Pat Booker will also need to be closed -- the northbound-to-southbound closed Friday 9 a.m. through Wednesday noon while the southbound-to-northbound will be closed Friday 9 a.m. through Monday 5 a.m. and again Wednesday through Friday noon to 3 p.m.

Depending on how much progress is made on the bridge demolition over the weekend, there may still be remaining work to be done -- in that case, additional closures of Pat Booker Road and turnarounds  will take place nightly Monday through Friday 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

This 3-mile-long project on Loop 1604 has a price tag of approximately $46 million. It started this January and is estimated to be completed late spring of 2021. The area covered by the project currently sees an average of 70,000 cars, projected to grow to nearly 90,000 by 2040. 

Beyond the mainlane widening work, this project will rehab frontage roads and change their configuration to provide continuous coverage, reconfigure ramps and add auxiliary lanes between ramps as well as the reconstruction of the Pat Booker overpass/bridge, which dates back to the early 1970s. The first phase of that work starts this weekend while the second is scheduled for late 2020.

Partner entities in the closure area including various municipalities, JBSA-Randolph, IKEA and The Forum shopping center have been notified of this major closure. We also have electronic signs alerting drivers, who should expect backups on Pat Booker Road as well as the Loop 1604 frontage roads. If possible, again, we're encouraging them to avoid the area and look into alternative routes.

 

US 281 Project: NB Sonterra Exit Ramp Long-Term Closure

In order to safely construct the westbound Loop 1604 to northbound US 281 direct connector (also known as a flyover), it will be necessary to close the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp on northbound US 281 (see graphic below). 

The closure is scheduled to take effect Monday, March 4, 2019 morning and is anticipated to continue through late summer 2019.

This closure allows for crews to work safely behind protective barrier while constructing direct connector substructures besides the Sonterra Boulevard exit ramp.

Drivers wishing to access Sonterra Boulevard will take the Frontage Road exit from northbound US 281 and proceed through the Loop 1604 intersection onto the next entrance ramp.

As always, this scheduled closure and duration is weather permitting and subject to change depending on the progress of the project.

Long-Term Closure On Hausman Road Widening Project

We're keenly aware of the high level of patience and understanding we ask of drivers along FM 1560 (Hausman Road) and other surrounding construction zones in the Helotes area,  such as SH 16 (Bandera Road) and Loop 1604. 

We want to highlight one particular area of concern that local residents will be facing -- the right- turn lane closure from Hausman to Bandera Road (SH 16), pictured below. We want you to know your feedback is very important to us as we asses how to best mitigate the length of this closure and traffic congestion.

 

The utility additions and adjustments under this portion of the roadway unfortunately make it are necessary for the improvement of our highway infrastructure. In an effort to make this closure as painless as possible for the traveling public, our project managers along with the contractor are re-evaluating the proposed methods of construction for these essential improvements. Unfortunately, this area has limited access points preventing us from establishing detours.

We have already identified potential elements that can be redesigned to accelerate construction. We plan to bore the proposed gas line crossing Hausman at this intersection instead of installing by open trench methods which would mean tearing through the roadway.

We have taken numerous measures to notify the public of this closure, such as installing portable electronic signs already in place for two weeks. We are also placing extra message boards along entrances from Loop 1604. We have posted about it online here through our blog, as well as through our social media channels. Additionally, we have teamed up with partner agencies such as the City of Helotes and we have also conducted interviews with the media as another way of getting the word out.

This closure is scheduled to start Monday, February 25 and it's projected to last approximately a month. Why that long? The contractor will install a 125-foot gas main crossing under Hausman required just inside of the existing pavement edge. There is also 150 feet of sanitary sewer installed directly under the right-turn lane requiring the construction of four supplemental manholes. Lastly, there's the construction of the drainage structure extending across Hausman.

Bottom line, our options are limited but we're doing our best to try to work through as quickly as possible and we'll continue to explore potential alternatives that could lessen the inconvenience that drivers surely will feel being stuck in traffic. There is light at the end of the tunnel -- once it's finished, this project will double the number of current lanes, establish raised medians and bring new sidewalks and bike lanes.

• Saturday, February 23. 3 a.m. until 10 p.m. Full mainlane closure in both directions from one mile west and one mile east of Fair Oaks Parkway for turnaround bridge work. DETOUR: Traffic will be diverted to the frontage road, continue through the intersection and re-enter I-10 at the next entrance ramp. 

I-10 – Far East San Antonio

• Current until further notice. Eastbound entrance ramp from FM 1516. DETOUR: Take next entrance ramp east of Loop 1604. 
• Saturday, February 16 until Monday, February 18. 4 a.m. until 6 a.m. Westbound exit ramp to Foster Road. DETOUR: Exiting traffic will take exit at FM 1516 and remain on the westbound frontage road to Foster Rd. 
• Sunday, February 17 until Friday, February 22. Nightly 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Left mainlane in both directions from just west of I-410 to Foster Road and from FM 1516 to Loop 1604 for construction truck access. 
• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Daily 9 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Eastbound-to-westbound turnaround at FM 1516 for construction truck access. 
• Tuesday, February 19 until Wednesday, February 20. 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. All westbound mainlanes between Foster Road and Ackerman Road for bridge work at Rosillo Creek. DETOUR: Westbound traffic will take the Ackerman Road exit to the frontage road and re-enter the mainlanes prior to reaching the Ackerman Road intersection. 

I-35 – Northeast San Antonio

• Saturday, February 16. 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. Northbound North New Braunfels exit ramp, southbound North New Braunfels entrance ramp and North New Braunfels overpass for asphalt and paving work. 
• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Nightly 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Alternating northbound mainlanes at FM 1103 (Exit 178) for bridge work. 

I-410 – West San Antonio

• Current until Monday, February 18. 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Alternating frontage road lanes in both directions between SH 16 (Bandera Road) to US 90 for crack sealing work. 
• Current until Friday, March 8. 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Two frontage road lanes in both directions at Marbach Road (including the intersection) for various tasks including installing panels, installing overhangs and pouring concrete. 
• Current until Thursday, February 21. 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Left northbound frontage road lane from Landing Avenue to Airlift Avenue for direct connector work. 

US 90 – West San Antonio

• Current until Friday, February 22. 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Alternating eastbound mainlanes from Ray Ellison Drive to I-410 for barrier removal and asphalt work. 
• Current until Thursday, February 21. 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Left westbound frontage road between Tomar Street and Hunt Lane for rail and curb work. 
• Saturday, February 16. 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Eastbound frontage road (entrance ramp to eastbound mainlanes) at Loop 1604 for direct connector work. 
• Sunday, February 17 until Wednesday, February 20. Nightly 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Westbound mainlanes at Loop 1604 for direct connector work. 
• Monday, February 18 until Saturday, February 23. Daily 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Westbound turnaround at Loop 1604. 
• Wednesday, February 20 until Thursday, February 21. Nightly 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Full mainlane closure from Loop 1604 to Military Drive in both directions for various tasks including barrier removal, painting bridge, sign placement and overhang bracket removal. DETOUR: Traffic will be diverted to the frontage roads. 

SH 151 – Far West San Antonio

• Current until 5 a.m. Saturday, February 16. Alternating westbound frontage road lanes from Marbach Road to West Military Drive for milling and asphalt work. 
• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Daily 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Alternating eastbound frontage road lanes from Castroville Road to Ingram Road for curb ramp work. 

PA 1502 – Wurzbach Parkway

• City of San Antonio closure for Hardberger Park Landbridge project. Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Daily 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Right lane in both directions from FM 1535 (NW Military Hwy.) to FM 2696 (Blanco Road) for construction truck and equipment access. 

FM 1976 – Walzem Road

• Current until further notice. Daily 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Alternating southbound lanes from Woodlake Parkway until Gibbs Sprawl Road for barrier work (existing seven total lanes narrowed to three, with one in each direction and a two-way turn lane in the middle).

• Saturday, February 16 until Monday, February 18. Daily 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. Two northbound lanes from Rigsby Avenue to Hammond Avenue (including closure of Amanda Street intersection) for storm drainage installation work. 

US 87 – Rigsby Avenue

• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Daily 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Westbound right lane from Willenbrook Avenue to WW White Road for sidewalk and driveway work. 

Loop 13 – WW White Road

• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Daily 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Northbound right lane from Boxwood Road to Rigsby Avenue for sidewalk and driveway work.

I-37 – South Region

SH 16 – McMullen County

• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Alternating lanes from Tilden to FM 1962 for excavation, structure installation and milling work. 

Other Roads – Bexar County

• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Alternating lanes of Potranco Road, Military Drive and Wiseman Boulevard in both directions at Loop 1604 for demolition and reconstruction of curb islands and medians. 
• Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22. Nightly 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Alternating lanes of eastbound and westbound Evans Road, west of US 281 for intersection work.
